The Jackie Bradley Era In Boston Is Over For Good

The Red Sox announced today that Jackie Bradley Jr. was DFA’d. It’s a bit of a sad day for the franchise. Another member of the 2018 Red Sox championship team is gone. Of course, Bradley departed Boston for Milwaukee in 2021. Boston reacquired him in the Hunter Renfroe deal but will say their goodbyes for good this time.

Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe was the first to report the news:

This was a numbers issue. Once Tommy Pham was traded for, there just wasn’t room on the roster despite what the organization told you. Their plan was to keep Jackie as the 4th outfielder. However, Rob Refsnyder and Kike Hernandez are both on the injured list. I would assume one is close to being ready to replace Bradley on the roster. It’s either that or they really would prefer to keep Jaylin Davis who was a waiver claim from San Francisco.

The correct decision would have been to trade Jarren Duran or send him to the minors. Bradley’s excellent defense is still worth having on this roster. Especially compared to what shit head Duran gives you. That’s just me but I’m sure Chaim’s computer logic wouldn’t allow him to make that move. He needs my help and every passing day proves it.

Don’t get it twisted, I love Jackie but this was the right call. Well, they should have at least tried to trade him at the deadline but there likely weren’t many takers. The guy plays a great centerfield and you can never take that away from him. However, at age 32 he’s lost a step and is no longer the best defender out there in the sport. His bat is also not major league caliber and frankly never really was outside of a few seasons in his prime.

The only part that truly sucks is we’re basically looking at $8 million in dead cap on the books for next year. Bradley had a mutual option for $12 million next year but could be declined for an $8 million buyout instead. All I know is this. Alex Binelas and David Hamilton better both be big league caliber players are this Hunter Renfroe trade was a FAIL.
