Jaccob Slavin To Sign Long-Term Extension With Hurricanes

Jaccob Slavin is heralded as one of the most underrated defensemen in the NHL over the past five or more years. However, he is now receiving his flowers. The 30-year-old will sign an eight-year extension with the Carolina Hurricanes once free agency opens at noon today. Unsurprisingly, it is a team friendly contract that will keep him in Raleigh for good. Frank Seravalli released all the info on the news this morning:

Slavin earned his second career Lady Byng Trophy this year with excellent play on both ends of the ice. He put up 37 points from the blue line in 2023-2024, five points off his career high from two seasons prior. His bread and butter is being a shutdown top-four defenseman who allows his partner to excel as a puck-mover. He simply does everything you want as a high-level blueliner, as evidenced by JFresh’s model:

It may not age great but that’s not the focus here. Eric Tulsky has his work cut out for him with this team as they are in a window that will not last forever. Despite having to part ways with Jake Guentzel, this team is still loaded with talent with a great drafting and prospect pipeline to boot. You probably will not find a better embodiment of the Hurricanes DNA than Slavin himself. A fourth round pick in 2012, the Denver native worked his way up to the NHL. Originally at Colorado College and then the AHL, he made his NHL debut during the 2015-2016 season and never looked back.

Where To Next?

Carolina has a lot of options for free agency. They will undoubtedly insert themselves in the mix for Lightning captain Steven Stamkos once 12pm hits. As well, the trade market is still fairly wide open. Doing business with their former GM Don Waddell makes sense here. They are a fit for Patrik Laine, especially on a retained salary. Expect them to target adding some more firepower up front or even dipping their toes in the goalie market. Remember, this is just the beginning compared to the next few hours!

The Carolina Hurricanes locked down one of their heart and soul players for what looks to be the rest of his career. Jaccob Slavin served them incredibly well and will continue to do so for the long haul.
