Hunter Renfroe Has Been a Massive Steal for the Boston Red Sox

Back in November 2020, the Tampa Bay Rays released outfielder Hunter Renfroe after a less-than-stellar season where he batted .156 and posted a paltry .645 OPS. The Boston Red Sox signed him a month later to a one-year/$3 million contract.

In his four-plus MLB seasons prior to his contract with the Red Sox, Renfroe had been a slightly above-average big league hitter. He hit 33 home runs in 2019 with the San Diego Padres, but he batted .216 and finished with a .289 on-base percentage. Renfroe had some pop in his bat, but wasn’t really a player to write home about.

This season, Hunter Renfroe has elevated his game in a number of areas. He’s hitting .256, which is on pace to be a career high. He has a .314 OBP, which would also be a career high. His 24 doubles? Also on pace for a career high. With around 40 games to go in the 2021 season, Renfroe has 71 runs batted in. You guessed it, that’s already a career high. The 29-year-old has also added a respectable 22 home runs and a league-leading 14 outfield assists.

Boston has gotten huge production out of Hunter Renfroe for just $3 million, and he’s a big reason why they are in the mix for a playoff spot. Red Sox GM Chaim Bloom might receive some warranted criticism for some moves he’s made in the past year (ahem, Hansel Robles), but Renfroe is one of the best calls he’s made while in charge.
