No beating around the bush for this post. Let’s just get to the point. The Simpsons Funday Football broadcast made its debut yesterday in a game that featured the Bengals and Cowboys. Let me set the stage for this review and then we’ll right into things.
If you didn’t even know this was a thing and want a sneak peek, this video catches you up to speed pretty well on what you missed.
I watch the Manningcast only for the first half when Bill Belichick is on. I usually switch over to the main broadcast for the second half. Since this game featured two teams who are going to miss the playoffs, I figured I’d give The Simpsons broadcast a try. I ended up watching about the first ten minutes of the third quarter before I couldn’t take it anymore and switched back to the main broadcast. This review is based on that length of time.
The Good:
There actually were some elements of the broadcast I liked. There were some funny moments. Especially when Lisa had a rant about how the commissioner is doing a piss poor job. They had some stuff preplanned just for this event and the main Simpsons stuff was funny. The humor in terms of things you expect from The Simpsons was there.
It really was more watchable than I thought it was going to be. The animations weren’t super terrible. The players moved just fine out there. The implementation of The Simpsons was executed well. Mostly in terms of the side stuff after scores and big plays.
The only way I can properly describe this is as potential. The potential is there to really pull this off. If anything, viewers should be encouraged by the fact that if this was their first attempt at it, imagine how good this style broadcast can be if they really nail it.
The Bad:
It was definitely a little too predictable. The worst part about the broadcast was that you can essentially predict anytime a big play was going to happen. A Simpsons character would just make his or her way onto the field and it only happened if there was going to be a big play in the game.
Wait why is Cooper Rush turning into Homer Simpsons again? Oh, because he threw a touchdown. Thanks for giving it away before the play even happens! That to me ruined a lot of it. What’s the point in watching if they’re going to give away anytime something good happens?
I’d argue the biggest problem with the broadcast was Mina Kimes and Dan Orlovsky. They were overly corny and they’re really not funny in general. Mina Kimes is trash. Orlovsky is really good at being delusional. This broadcast would have been so much better if they weren’t part of it. Don’t even try to argue it. They’re both trash. It was like they were trying to trade puns back and forth that weren’t funny.
This is the part I didn’t understand. Why not have characters from The Simpsons broadcast the game? The possibilities there are endless. If you’re going to have a Simpsons broadcast, why not have the characters call the game instead of mediocre ESPN talent nobody wants to listen to?
Overall, it wasn’t terrible. I’m not sure I’d ever watch it again over real football, but I think this has potential if they execute it better in the future.
