Hazard will leave Madrid after reaching an agreement with the club to terminate his contract one year early.
The 32-year-old Belgian winger joined Real Madrid in 2019 as one of soccer’s biggest stars. Madrid paid an initial fee of €100 million and signed Hazard to a five-year contract, believing that he was going to be a key player for the club.
Unfortunately, he has not been able to recreate the same magic that captivated Premier League fans for years since his move to Madrid. Fitness issues and constant injuries have hampered his time with Madrid, and he has looked like a shell of the player he once was for Chelsea.
He has never recovered from his fitness and injury problems and lost his starting role to Vinícius Júnior, who has recently emerged as one of the best-attacking players in the world.
This season, Hazard has only made six La Liga appearances, four of which were from the bench. He didn’t score a goal in his six appearances.
During his time in Madrid, he won eight trophies: one Champions League, one Club World Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups.
“Real Madrid wants to express its affection for Eden Hazard and wishes him and his entire family the best of luck in this new period,” said Madrid in a statement about Hazard’s departure.
Real Madrid also announced that Marco Asensio will leave the club at the end of the season.
Although Asensio has been in contract negotiations with Madrid for the past year, he ultimately decided to not renew his contract and will depart the Spanish capital in search of a new challenge.
The coaching staff at Madrid was hoping that Asensio would remain at the club. Asensio wanted a more prominent role in the team, however, something Madrid could not promise.
Asensio has been with Madrid for seven years after signing from Mallorca in 2014.
During his time with Los Blancos, he won 17 trophies: three Champions Leagues, four Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups.
“As madridistas we will never forget his career and his outstanding conduct during all this time,” said the club in their statement. “Real Madrid is and will always be his home, and we wish him and all his family the best of luck in this new chapter in his career.”
Asensio is expected to move to PSG and has already reached a verbal agreement with the French giants, according to Fabrizio Romano.
