It’s another year of fantasy hockey. Trey remains undefeated and a bunch of our annual players tucked their tails between their legs and quit out of shame. I tried to get into a few “expert” leagues this year but all of them are running scared too. This year we only have eight teams but that just means it’s harder to have a bad team.
The site always puts out a ton of fantasy content but I also think it’s good for you the viewer to see how things shake out. Often times you can learn something from seeing how another draft shakes out. In case you missed it, James Herrick put together this same post for our fantasy football league.
Without further ado, let’s get to the rankings.
8: Chad Bauman – Northampton Konkrete Kids
Players – Brady Tkachuk, Roman Josi, Kyle Connor, Alex Ovechkin, Frank Vatrano, Carter Verhaeghe, Wyatt Johnston, Joel Eriksson Ek, Jordan Kyrou, Fabian Zetterlund, Erik Karlsson, Brock Nelson, Jared McCann, Jacob Trouba, Darnell Nurse, Trevor Moore, Tyson Foerster, Claude Giroux, Sam Bennett, Drew Doughty, Joel Farabee, Bryan Rust, Colton Parayko, Blake Coleman, Kirill Marchenko, Kyle Palmieri, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Binnington
Best pick – Erik Karlsson (11th round, 87th overall)
Worst pick – Frank Vatrano (5th round, 39th overall
It’s important to note that Chad was driving and went auto draft mode. Sean Allen and the CPU didn’t do him many favors. We talked about how terrible the Frank Vatrano ranking was. Some picks in here are fine but he got hit with CPU cheese left and right. I expect a last place finish for the Konkrete Kids.
7: Ryan – Booty Juice
Players – Nikita Kucherov, JT Miller, Elias Pettersson, Igor Shesterkin, Quinn Hughes, Nick Suzuki, Vincent Trocheck, Jonathan Marchessault, Alex Pietrangelo, Kevin Fiala, Anze Kopitar, Sergei Bobrovsky, Filip Gustavsson, Juraj Slafkovsky, Mats Zuccarello, Patrick Kane, Philipp Kurashev, Yegor Sharangovich, Ryan O’Reilly, Seth Jarvis, Mattias Ekholm, Travis Sanheim, Filip Hronek, Cam York, Brayden McNabb, Matt Duchene, Pavel Zacha, Mikael Grandlund
Best Pick – Seth Jarvis (20th round, 159th overall)
Worst Pick – Filip Gustavsson (13th round, 98th overall)
Ryan’s first time doing fantasy hockey. Certainly some strong picks but some stinkers mixed in there along the way. Don’t think it was necessary to reach on some of the goalie picks. Also taking Marchessault and Pietrangelo that high is certainly risky. Needs another strong year from the Canucks and a healthy Kucherov season to be competitive.
6: Matt Matt
Players – David Pastrnak, Matthew Tkachuk, Rasmus Dahlin, Sam Reinhart, Juuse Saros, Travis Konecny, Dougie Hamilton, Moritz Seider, Alex DeBrincat, Owen Tippett, Brock Faber, Linus Ullmark, Martin Necas, Zach Werenski, Nikolaj Ehlers, Brady Skjei, Brock Boeser, Jeff Skinner, Matvei Michkov, Teuvo Teravainen, Trevor Zegras, Gustav Nyquist, Shane Wright, Gustav Forsling, Valeri Nichushkin, Evan Rodrigues, Phillip Danault, Conor Garland
Best Pick – Alex DeBrincat (9th round, 69th overall)
Worst Pick – Linus Ullmark (12th round, 92nd overall)
This is Matt’s second appearance in the league after a non-playoff season in year one. I think he did much better this time. The team is good and sports plenty of heavy hitters. Certainly has a much better chance to make the playoffs this go around. if there is one concern, it’s that you’re really counting on Ullmark to carry the load in net on a bad Ottawa team.
5: Chickster / Garrett – Dumb and Dumber
Players – Auston Matthews, Jack Hughes, Artemi Panarin, Connor Hellebuyck, Dylan Larkin, Evan Bouchard, Clayton Keller, Josh Morrissey, Jesper Bratt, Brandon Montour, Thatcher Demko, Drake Batherson, Jake Sanderson, JJ Peterka, Artturi Lekonen, Alexis Lafreniere, Stuart Skinner, William Eklund, Charlie Lindgren, William Karlsson, Michael Bunting, Neal Pionk, Gabriel Landeskog, Cam Fowler, Tyler Bertuzzi, Jaccob Slavin, Joseph Woll, Tyler Seguin
Best Pick – Jesper Bratt (9th round, 68th overall)
Worst Pick – Charlie Lindgren (19th round, 148th overall)
Chickster and Garrett tag-teamed it this year. A really solid effort. I actually think they drafted better as a combo rather than separate. Chickster still falls into the same trap every year of taking way too many goalies, only to have them rot on the bench. Do we actually think he will pay attention to the goalie rotations to maximize their starts? No chance. Why he rosters five goalies makes no sense but I understand he can’t help himself. Has some good top end talent that will keep him in the mix.
4: Jerry Walker – Jerry’s Scary Team
Players – Mikko Rantanen, William Nylander, Steven Stamkos, Mika Zibanejad, Jake Guentzel, John Tavares, Chris Kreider, Tage Thompson, Adrian Kempe, Evgeni Malkin, Mike Matheson, Nazem Kadri, Tyler Toffoli, Patrik Laine, Marco Rossi, Brad Marchand, Justin Faulk, Kris Letang, Brent Burns, Seth Jones, Matt Roy, Anders Lee, Dylan Cozens, Dylan Strome, Mikael Backlund, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Cam Talbot, Logan Thompson
Best Pick – Adrian Kempe (9th round, 70th overall)
Worst Pick – Patrik Laine (14th round, 107 overall)
Jerry is back in the league for his third year. He put his fate up to Sean Allen and the CPU. He fared much better than Chad did on the auto cheese. Has some damn good picks. His forward group is loaded. The defense and goalies… not so much. He’s going to need his goal scorers to light it up, which can’t be counted out because that group he has is dangerous.
3: Jamie – In Max We Trust
Players – Connor McDavid, Andrei Vasilevskiy, Sidney Crosby, Mitch Marner, Zach Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Lucas Raymond, Alexandar Georgiev, Nico Hischier, Andrei Svechnikov, K’Andre Miller, Frederick Andersen, Rasmus Andersson, Mikhail Sergachev, Charlie McAvoy, Robert Thomas, Brandon Hagel, Jamie Benn, Vince Dunn, Matias Maccelli, Morgan Rielly, Brayden Schenn, Charlie Coyle, Matty Beniers, Adam Larsson, Shayne Gostisbehere, Dylan DeMelo, Alex Killorn
Best Pick – Robert Thomas (16th round, 128th overall)
Worst Pick – K’Andre Miller (11th round, 81st overall)
Jamie snipped me on Charlie McAvoy and Robert Thomas wisely picking them several spots above where they were ranked. That irked me. She actually did a damn good job and having McJesus be the air craft carrier sure helps. Considering it was her first time, this was great work.
2: Chris Bagdonas – Bagdonas On Ice
Players – Nathan MacKinnon, Kirill Kaprizov, Brayden Point, Jason Robertson, Filip Forsberg, Victor Hedman, Noah Dobson, Tim Stutzle, MacKenzie Weegar, John Carlson, Alex Tuch, Cole Caufield, Ilya Sorokin, Bo Horvat, Devon Toews, Adin Hill, Mathew Barzal, Jacob Markstrom, Pavel Buchnevich, Quinton Byfield, Thomas Harley, Leo Carlsson, Jakob Chychrun, Viktor Arvidsson, Shane Pinto, Ilya Samsonov, Zach Benson, Kaiden Guhle
Best Pick – Jakob Chychrun (Round 23, 179th overall)
Worst Pick – MacKenzie Weegar (Round 9, 67th overall)
Credit to Bagdonas who obviously pays attention and gets better the more he does this. This is his best team ever and has a real shot to win. Nailed his top picks and made smart gambles along the way. He’s going to be a tough out, which is what happens when you follow the signs. His forward group is great and I really like that he got Carlson and Chychrun to ensure he gets the guy in Washington. Job well done.
1: Trey Daubert – Icing Daubert
Players – Leon Draisaitl, Cale Makar, Jack Eichel, Connor Bedard, Aleksander Barkov, Sebastian Aho, Adam Fox, Miro Heiskanen, Roope Hintz, Tomas Hertl, Jeremy Swayman, Jake Oettinger, Matt Boldy, Timo Meier, Noah Hanifin, Elias Lindholm, Mark Scheifele, Logan Cooley, Mark Stone, Shea Theodore, Sean Durzi, Dylan Guenther, Luke Hughes, Thomas Chabot, Troy Terry, Pavel Mintyukov, Mason McTavish, Casey Mittelstadt
Best Pick – Mark Scheifele (Round 17, 136th overall)
Worst Pick – Logan Cooley (Round 18, 137th overall)
Won’t go too long here. Feel free to drop those comments on how I did. I love the team heading into this season. It’s the best D core I’ve ever assembled in fantasy hockey. Forward group is a bit down from years past but I love the depth I added long the way. I’m expecting another championship season but it will be harder after promising the group I’d pick last. My team is stacked but it will really be stacked if the Ducks/Utah take leaps this year. That’s the biggest X-Factor of my group. Oh, and get Jeremy Swayman signed, please.
