Pat Shurmur only knows how to do one thing. Shurmur doesn’t know how to brush his teeth, or fold laundry, or even vacuum a rug. No, Shurmur only knows one thing. That one thing is how to lose football games as an NFL head coach. It took two years for the Giants to realize that Shurmur is not a capable coach and fired him today.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:
The Giants have been running through head coaches. Shouldn’t that tell you that Dave Gettleman needs to go too? Part of this is a roster issue and Gettleman has not made good decisions. This is a bad football team with very little talent on it. Gettleman is to blame for that.
Still, it’s not like Shurmur can coach anyway. You can just tell from his press conferences, he’s not a leader or a guy that feels like he has the situation under control. Shurmur feels a lot like Norv Turner. Capable offensive coordinator, horrific head coach. Pat Shurmur has a career coaching record of 19-45. That’s a .297 career winning percentage. Shurmur isn’t much better during his Giants tenure with a record of 9-22.
The Giants have to find a guy that can turn Daniel Jones into a franchise quarterback. It’s been an up and down rookie year for Jones. He’s looked more capable than I thought he would be. Now the scouting report is out. Bringing in the right head coach to help him has to be the priority. Signs point to Jason Garrett possibly being that guy.
Regardless of who the Giants pick, he’s bound to be better than Pat Shurmur. He only knew how to do one thing. Lose NFL football games as a head coach. I’m sure he will land on his feet for a team that needs an offensive coordinator.
