Ex-MLB Player Gary Sheffield Doesn’t Watch Baseball Anymore

Gary Sheffield used to shine in the limelight of Major League Baseball. He had a funky batting stance which consisted of him waving the bat over his head back and forth and somehow using it to smack 509 career home runs. His career spanned 22 years and appeared on the Marlins, Dodgers, Braves, Yankees, and others. He also appeared in nine all-star games, so one could say he had an illustrious Major League Baseball career.

Over the span of his 12-year retirement so far, baseball is evolving for better or for worse. Such changes include the emphasis of the shift, the uptick in home runs and strikeouts, and the overall usage of a computer to dictate how a lineup is assembled or how a defense is positioned. Sheffield is a harsh critic of it, too. He appeared on TBS’s “Tiki and Tierney Show” where he was very open about his opinions on the evolving sport.

I don’t watch baseball at all. I was kind of forced to watch baseball because I was working with TBS. And so I had to remember, really find out who were these players. I’ll tell you the secret now: I never watched the games during the season. I would get educated on it when I got there… It’s not something that I could watch, based on what I’m seeing, because I’ll be a complainer… This is the first time I’ve ever said that out loud, but I’m just truly disappointed with what I watch.” – Sheffield

This is truly crazy to think about. Later on in the interview, he states his distaste how many home runs there are hit nowadays, but that in itself contradicts the era that he played in. Yes, there are more home runs now, but in the steroid era of the 1990s, home runs were SUPER common. Sheffield comes off as an old fart.
