With all of my extra time, I have been rewatching Game of Thrones. I decided that it would be fun to do a mock Game of Thrones NHL team.
This was harder than I thought it was going to be. I wanted to use my favorite characters, but I realized not all of them would do what I wanted for my NHL team. I also wanted to try and make a team with human characters. Sadly, I didn’t add Daenerys’ dragons, the giants, or even the Night King. Some of the characters were hard to put into specific positions, but I think I created a solid team.
My Bench
To start, I chose Olenna Tyrell for my general manager. She would make a good general manager because she does anything for her family. If this team was her family, she wouldn’t be afraid to pull another purple wedding if it came down to it. Olenna is also known for being brutally honest, she would tell her team exactly what needed to be heard.
On the other hand, I chose Tyrion Lannister to be the coach. Tyrion has a way of being diplomatic in his speech. While the team would have Olenna to tell the truth, Tyrion would be able to help balance that by being nicer. Meanwhile, Tyrion is someone that will fight for himself and those he believes in. His diplomacy would help with strategy as well.
I was having a hard time trying to choose one person to be a substitute. I finally landed on having Sandor “The Hound” Clegane. Although he is selective about who he cares about, we all know he cares at least a little. Between that and being able to fight everyone ruthlessly, he’d be a good pick for the team.
Defense
I decided for my defense that I wanted to have strong characters that would help defend the goal. This lineup is my favorite because I was able to use some of my favorite characters.
I chose Arya Stark as my goalie. At first, I put her in the offense since she is so quick, but I think that it’d be better served as a goalie. Arya has amazing quick reflexes that would help extremely well with catching a puck. She also isn’t afraid of many things. I think if she was a goalie, she would most likely reflect Dominik Hasek.
On the left I put Tormund. He is fiercely loyal and is ready to fight at any moment. Tormund’s fighting ability with a sword would translate well to using a hockey stick. I do not doubt that he would be giving 110% every game.
On the right side, I put Brienne of Tarth. Much like Tormund, her loyalty is strong. Her fighting capabilities are also well versed. The fact that she beat The Hound means that she’d be ready to face any team with confidence. She also wouldn’t be afraid of checking people. Brienne would lay her life down for the team, which is why she’s a great choice.
Between Arya, Tormund, and Brienne, the other teams would have a hard time scoring. They all fight for what they believe in, meaning that their chemistry would make a great defensive line. Tormund may also put in some extra effort if he knows Brienne is there as well.
Offense
For my offense, I wanted fast wingers with a sturdy center. I think that I found a good combination for my Game of Thrones NHL team.
On the left, I put Oberyn Martell. We got to see that he was a talented fighter. He was quick, and he was smart. His skills with a spear would mean that a hockey stick isn’t too far fetched for him. Oberyn also showed that he liked talking to his opponents. This may not have been the best thing for him in the show, but in hockey, it would make the game more interesting. He also was known for holding grudges, which we see in the game too.
In the center, I decided to put Jon Snow. With his leadership skills, he would be a great center. We all know that he is a great fighter which is a bonus. He would also be there to calm down any situation. Jon is also loyal and would do anything for his team. With that, I would assign him to be my team’s captain as well.
For right-winger, I landed on Daario Naharis. Growing up in the fighting pits means that he’d be able to fight and defend. He is quick on his feet, which is great for wingers. Much like the other characters, he is loyal to a cause he believes in, meaning he’d fight for the team. Daario (and Oberyn) has a charm that people are gravitated towards as well. This fits in well with the likable players in the NHL.
This lineup is interesting because of the chemistry that it creates. Unlike the defense, these characters never interact in the show. There is a chance that because Oberyn and Daario are prideful, that could create some conflict. They might end up competing against each other. But, with Jon as a center, he’d be there to squash any conflict that arises between the wingers.
Conclusion
All of the characters that I chose would create a strong NHL team. My general manager and coach are smart and strategic. My defense is strong and loyal. And my offense is quick and ready to score.
Although some positions were harder to fill than others, the Game of Thrones NHL team I created would be a fierce opponent. This would lead to an interesting change in the game if this became a real team.
