Former five-star and Ohio State quarterback Quinn Ewers is transferring to Texas, per an announcement on his Twitter page Sunday night.
Ewers, the former No. 1 overall recruit in the Class of 2022, decided to reclassify into the 2021 class and enroll early at Ohio State. The move was immediately linked to the potential monetary gain Ewers could make through the NCAA’s name, image and likeness. Texas prohibits high school athletes from profiting off of NIL, so Ewers enrolled at OSU in August, with great monetary success just around the corner. On August 31, he cashed in, signing a NIL deal with autograph company GTSM over three years for $1.4 million, with several other deals to boot.
Ewers, a Southlake, Texas native, originally signed with the Longhorns in early 2021, but when then-coach Tom Herman was fired, he backed off his commitment and later signed with the Buckeyes. The redshirt freshman never attempted a throw for the Buckeyes, losing the job to Heisman finalist C.J. Stroud.
Ewers will compete for the starting job under head coach Steve Sarkisian, but one would presume that he is QB1 come the Longhorns season opener against Louisiana-Monroe next fall.
