A few years ago, I wrote a piece about Mo Alie-Cox making the transition from college basketball to the NFL. Alie-Cox played basketball at VCU. Interestingly enough, VCU does not have a football team. Therefore, the transition was really odd. However, Alie-Cox looked like someone that could actually make the transition given the way he played basketball. I actually would have drafted him as a 7th round flier.
As we enter the 2020 season, Mo Alie-Cox hasn’t done much. In two seasons of playing time, the former VCU product has 8 receptions for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns. That part isn’t super surprising. We knew that he was going to need time to develop. BUT… now is the time. This is Alie-Cox’s third NFL season. It’s officially go time.
I initially thought that Alie-Cox was going to get a real opportunity in 2020. Indianapolis let Eric Ebron go and never really tried to retain him. It was going to be Alie-Cox and Jack Doyle in a tight end tandem that was very interesting. Then the Colts signed Trey Burton and pretty much put Alie-Cox back in that third wheel role.
I’m still a believer in Mo Allie-Cox. Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, and Jimmy Graham have all made enormous impacts as former college basketball players in the NFL. Alie-Cox just looks the part. 6-foot-5, 267, with serious hops and speed. This is someone I would not give up on. It remains to be seen if Alie-Cox is a serious part of the Colts future plans.
