Excellent 2022 Season Proves Tyler Anderson is Underrated

Good pitching is incredibly hard to come by. Having a starter who can stay healthy through the duration of 30 outings throughout a season is every manager’s dream. The Los Angeles Dodgers are blessed with a few of these, but one of them is a name that’s not known. It’s left-hander Tyler Anderson.

Nobody anticipated Anderson to be as good as he is this year. Up until 2022, his career stats were not significant. He was 29-38 with a 4.62 ERA and a bad WHIP of 1.315. Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman once again saw potential in someone deemed subpar.

Boy did it ever pay off. Anderson has gone above and beyond in 2022, even earning his first career All-Star appearance. As of Sept. 29, he is 15-4 with a 2.54 ERA and an impressive 0.996 WHIP. His earned run average is fifth in the NL. He could definitely garner some Cy Young votes.

What makes it even more impressive is the fact that Anderson has been the go-to guy in the rotation. Clayton Kershaw and Dustin May suffered setbacks throughout the year and Walker Buehler received Tommy John surgery. As a result, Julio Urias and Tyler Anderson have been the rocks in that rotation.

The postseason will ultimately test Anderson’s newfound success. Back when he was on the Rockies, he pitched in the 2017 and 2018 playoff runs. His first appearance wasn’t great. In one inning, he allowed two earned runs against the Diamondbacks in the 2018 Wild Card Game.

His second postseason appearance was downright excellent. Although he took the loss, he went six innings allowing only one run to the Milwaukee Brewers while striking out five. This must’ve attracted Friedman’s attention.

With the way the new postseason format is in 2022, all hands are on deck for all participating. The Dodgers expect Anderson to go deep into games, especially with all the injuries the team has suffered. I think it is safe to say that the Dodgers fixed Tyler Anderson and the rest of the league should be on notice.
