Does Bill Simmons Hate Hockey?
Bill Simmons wants you to believe that he is THE sports historian. In reality, he just spends hours a day cranking it to the NBA trade machine. That’s the truth and it’s exactly who The Ringer is. Another run of the mill sports brand that prides itself on writing exclusively long pieces that nobody has time to read.
In typical Ringer / Simmons fashion (don’t worry, he didn’t contribute to this article. We already know by now he’s too lazy to write anymore) they put out a blog post on the best sports moments from 2022. On the surface a really good idea and a way for multiple staff writers to contribute to the piece. When you actually click the post and scroll through it, you realize that it’s a big giant slap in the face to the sport of hockey.
Don’t ask me why Simmons believes it’s more important to create Indian burns on his pecker by cranking it to the trade machine over having a single NHL blogger. I can’t answer those questions. Can you imagine if I had his resources?
In the post The Ringer compiled their top 52 sports moments from the year. College football, NFL, and NBA moments are frequently mentioned. It even has moments from the WWE, tennis, and chess. Zero hockey moments. Not one.
Could I make the argument that the Colorado Avalanche winning the Stanley Cup was more relevant than St. Bonaventure winning the NIT? I think you could certainly make that case.
What about Alexander Ovechkin scoring 800 goals and being within reach of passing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time mark? Was that more relevant LAFC winning the MLS? I think you can make that argument.
What about Connor McDavid scoring 33 points in 16 playoff games for the Oilers last year in what is arguable the best playoff run by a single player ever? Imagine if he played on a good team? was that more relevant than Matt Ryan on the Lakers hitting a random shot in a regular season game? Do we start to understand how ignorant The Ringer is to the sport of hockey when McDavid does stuff like this on a nightly basis?
I understand that McDavid goal was from 2021 but you get my point. You’re telling me there isn’t one thing he did in 2022 that was more relevant than a random regular season Sacramento Kings game?
How can you be the sports historian when you’re ignorant to one of the greatest sports the world has to offer? In fact, if you go to The Ringer’s website, they don’t have a single article pertaining to hockey. Bill Simmons doesn’t try to cover it. Does Simmons hate hockey? I think the answer is a resounding yes.
Now you may be saying to yourself “Trey who cares”? They don’t have to cover hockey if they don’t want to. You may be right. However, don’t you think it becomes disrespectful when you’re covering CHESS over hockey in a post regarding the best moments in sports in a particular year? I’d argue yes.
Show some respect, Bill. Hockey is a great sport. NHL fans everywhere should take this personally. I hope every hockey fan out there knows Vendetta Sports will always bring hockey coverage to the table. I can’t say the same for the guy who gets horned up on the NBA trade machine.
