Dennis Schroder Compares NBA Trade Deadline To “Modern Slavery”

A very unique quote by Dennis Schroder when talking about the days up to the NBA trade deadline. He has a few choice words to say. I’ll let you read what he says before I give my thoughts on it. Full quote provided by NBC Sports:

“At the end of the day, your salary is still the same,” Schröder said to NBC Sports Bay Area in an exclusive interview after the Warriors’ 104-99 win against the Orlando Magic on Monday night. “You go to a different city, of course, but at the end of the day, that’s not a real problem. That’s a luxury problem. It’s always exciting to you guys [the media] probably. For me, being in my 12th season, business is business. I got my own team in Germany. I know how it works. For me, it’s a business at the end of the day.”

“Luka Dončić just got traded and got five f–—g NBA First Teams,” Schröder said. “All-Stars, he brought money to them, NBA Finals last year and $117 million he can’t sign now because he got traded, and that’s no state income tax. From now on, I see it even more crazier than it was, because to trade somebody like that, nobody’s safe. Not even Steph Curry’s safe probably when I see that. It’s a f––d up business.”

“It’s like modern slavery,” Schröder said. “It’s modern slavery at the end of the day. Everybody can decide where you’re going, even if you have a contract. Yeah, of course, we make a lot of money and we can feed our families, but at the end of the day if they say, ‘You’re not coming to work tomorrow, you’re going over there,’ they can decide that. They got to change that a little bit. But still grateful that we’re here and that we can live this every single day. I think everybody who’s in here is blessed. But if you really think about it, it is kind of crazy that the organization can tell you, ‘We want you to be team-first, but you’re going over there.’ It’s a lot.”

Respectfully, what the blank is Dennis Schroder talking about? “Modern slavery,” what an idiotic thing to say. These guys are getting paid millions and make millions. If they don’t like it, they can literally retire tomorrow and it will be fine. Slavery is a real issue, an issue that is far worse than playing basketball for literal millions. This is so incredibly tone-deaf by Schroder to even think that this is something that can be comparable. Boo hoo you got traded to a city thousand miles away, I wonder how you will manage with your generational wealth. Your family will suffer with that generational wealth as well right?

I, a normal person (or as close as I can be), went to 4 high schools, I moved to a high school 4000 miles away and a year and a half later I went to a high school 1200 miles away. It sucked and I didn’t complain like this, I don’t have generational wealth (yet, Vendetta to the moon). Does it get sucked to be traded? Probably, is it anything to compare MODERN SLAVERY to? No, absolutely not. Poor choice of words from Dennis Schroder, someone who has generational wealth from playing basketball, a children’s game. He’s good at it, at least enough to be paid millions by the NBA and its teams. I’m surprised he is not getting more flak for this, honestly.
