Dejounte Murray suffers season-ending achilles injury

New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray tore his achilles in the team’s 118-116 loss to the Boston Celtics Friday evening and will miss the rest of the season, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported.

Murray was limited to just eight minutes before suffering the injury toward the end of the first quarter in Friday’s game. It was a non-contact injury suffered after corralling a miss outside of the paint. He was helped to the locker room and did not return. Murray finished with four points and five rebounds on 2-of-6 shooting.

Outside of 2018-19, Murray, 28, has been fairly durable his entire career, but a pair of freak injuries has damaged his first season in New Orleans.

He fractured his hand in the team’s season-opener, missing the first month of the season. In 30 games entering Friday, the 6-foot-5 guard averaged 17.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.6 assists, shooting a career-worst 39.3 percent from the floor and 29.9 percent from 3-point range.

Entering 2024-25, Murray played at least 90 percent of his team’s games in four of his previous nine seasons, appearing in a career-high 78 games last season.

The Pelicans have dealt with myriad injuries all season–owning the second-worst record in the Western Conference at 12-37. Whether it’s Brandon Ingram–who hasn’t played since Dec. 7 (ankle)–Zion Williamson, CJ McCollum or Trey Murphy, the injury bug hasn’t stopped.

With less than one week until the 2024-25 NBA Trade Deadline, it would behoove them to sell off assets not named Murray, Murphy, Herbert Jones and Yves Missi. It’s time to hit the reset button and gear for 2026, especially since the 2025 NBA Draft is loaded with premier talent.
