Is Davis Mills actually good? It’s hard to know for sure but we should all be excited for what’s to come for the Texans quarterback. (Michael Reaves / Getty Images)

Is Davis Mills Actually Good?

Davis Mills might just be a lot like that new kid at school who doesn’t say a whole lot. Then three months later, you realize that kid was pretty cool and you had no idea why you weren’t hanging out with him. Maybe we just didn’t do our homework? Maybe Davis Mills is actually good?

We can say what we want about recruiting rankings, but more often than not they’re right. You know pretty early when you see a child prodigy. Mills was a pretty big deal coming up through high school. Mills was the number one high school quarterback recruit in the country back in 2017. I think that might mean something?

Mills checks a lot of boxes.

Size? Yas queen.

Mobility? Sure. Yes.

Arm strength? Yup.

Mills, 23, had a really impressive rookie season when you consider the circumstances. The Texans hired a coach they already fired and without question have the worst roster in the league. Mills completed 66.8% of his throws to go along with a 16-10 TD to INT ratio in 11 starts. Not half bad. Is it crazy to suggest Mills could develop his way into a top tier quarterback?

Obviously, we still don’t really know Mills’ potential. We have a long way to go and hopefully, the Texans can build a real roster around their new quarterback. Getting a bounty of picks for Deshaun Watson would go a long way towards helping that cause. Are we sure any of it matters considering the dysfunction that’s gone on with this team?

Mills was always worth the gamble but it was impossible to take him prior to when the Texans did. How could we take a guy any higher than the 67th pick in the third round? We only got 14 college starts out of the guy and they weren’t exactly jump off the television performances. Kellen Mond got picked one spot lower and we already know he stinks.

It’s such a weird guy to discuss right now. Mills is never part of any talk shows because I’m not sure anybody knows what to do with him. It’s going to be a beautiful story that develops before our eyes. For Mills, I hope he thrives because it’s okay to be a late bloomer.
