Dave Portnoy/Joe Rogan Expose NFL?

Dave Portnoy was just a guest on Joe Rogan’s popular podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience.” And while the entire podcast is interesting and worth a listen. I want to mainly focus on their talks regarding the NFL and the process of them covering up head injuries within the league.

While not talked about for a long time, both men brought up interesting points and conspiracies that I think are worth talking about. The conversation started with them talking about Brett Farve and the possibility of him having CTE. This then prompted Portnoy to ask Rogan why head injuries aren’t talked about as much in sports like MMA when compared to football. Rogan had this to say in response.

“I think in football it was never known, Whereas in boxing it was always known as punch drunk”. “Everyone always knew about it.”

Rogan also added

“Everybody knows what happened to Muhammad Ali, Everybody saw Joe Frazier at the end of his career, Everybody saw these guys who could barely talk, who used to be these great fighters” You gotta be aware of the risks but you know what your getting into when you get into it.”

The point Rogan makes here Is I think a good one. With a sport like boxing, it was impossible to hide the apparent effects the head trauma was causing. And so it became clear for anyone trying to become a boxer that this was a potential consequence of choosing this career. And people made the decision to become a boxer/MMA fighters from there.

Whereas with the NFL, as Portnoy pointed out, they were much more hesitant to release the severity of these head injuries and the risks associated with playing football.

“Goodell Hid it, I beleive they just buried the surveys.” I think they buried a lot of it, released their own, and control it.” Ive had my issues with the NFL, I think ther’ye like maybe the most powerful group their is.” Portnoy said.

Now while both Rogan and Portnoy are far from experts within the NFL/ head trauma field. They do bring up some interesting points. It’s no secret to anyone that the NFL hid the dangers of concussions and CTE from players and fans. And Joe Rogan even references the NFL’s attempt to intimidate scientists studying the link and harming their reputation rather than dealing with the issue.

“The Flip Side” said Portnoy “I think 99% would sign up for that anyway.” For 99.9% of Americans, I would think being a star football player is worth that risk.”

I think this also is a very valid point. We are at a time when the dangers of these head injuries are relatively well known. Despite this, kids all over America still dream of being football players due to the fame and wealth that comes with it. They may be aware of these risks but the NFL does a good job of distracting you from them until it’s too late.

“People dont worry about whats gonna happen, genrally at 50 when their 20” “Jimmy Buffet Quote, Living and dying in three quarters time.”

I think this is unfortunately the mindset many of these athletes have and blinds them to the risks. It’s a simple trade-off but one that we see many people make in pursuit of greatness. Both Portnoy and Rogan point out, it’s something any average person would take a chance on as well.

Again neither one of these guys is an expert in this field. In fact, Dave Portnoy does and says some things that really make me scratch my head. But overall I found this to be a very interesting discussion and I think they did a great job linking UFC and combat sports to American Football.

The NFL obviously has a closet full of dirty skeletons, and we as fans may never know the full extent of them. And to be honest I don’t really care. I’m still gonna watch football, you’re still gonna watch football, and football will continue to be the dominant sport in America.

However, as of late, the NFL and its reputation to protect players has certainly taken a hit. I personally don’t know how any parent could allow their kid to play football after seeing what happened to Damar Hamlin. It was a horrifying site and one that is sure to prevent lots of parents from letting their kids play football.
