I hate what the Spurs did at point guard this offseason. No need to bury the lede. It is what it is. Their free agency window stunk. Period. End of story. I’m going to talk about Darius Garland now because he should have been the preferred target all along.
Now, it seems like Garland was on San Antonio’s list. Reports indicate that the Spurs did try to get a deal done for Garland. I’m just not sure they tried hard enough. They quickly pivoted to Chris Paul giving him their entire mid-level. Meanwhile, the dopey Suns were patient and got Tyus Jones for the minimum.
I’m sorry but what does having Chris Paul around accomplish? Great mentor for the young rookie out of UConn. Yippee on that. I think it’s more insane that anybody gave CP3 anything higher than the minimum. We do get that CP3 is closer to being the Spurs version of Udonis Haslam than he is to his actual All-Star form, right?
Have to get Garland before it’s too late. Call the Cavs again. Send Dan Gilbert an edible arrangement. Garland is the answer and if you don’t get him now you’re going to have to pay the Gobert package if you wait two years. His stock is at an all time low with Donovan Mitchell taking the spotlight and the weird jaw injury that wrecked his season.
Get it done Spurs. This is your replica of Murray and Jokic. A Garland and Wemby core can win it all with the right pieces around them.
Draymond Green can call the CP3 move a genius move all he wants but unless Stephon Castle turns into a blue chip talent, the Spurs blew it. Something that can’t happen as the Wemby era starts to kick into gear.
