Dan Orlovsky Illustrates Exactly Why Justin Herbert Is Overhyped

I thought Justin Herbert had a great 2020 NFL Scouting Combine performance. That was to be expected. Herbert is big, strong, athletic, with a hose. I’m never denied those things. What’s concerning is his ability to let it rip in actual games. Herbert was a check down machine in college and never showed an ability to pick a part defenses down the field. If his Oregon athletes didn’t make plays after the catch, they were screwed.

Dan Orlovsky did a really great job breaking down why I’ve been so down on Herbert throughout this process.

That game Orlovsky is referring to is the Auburn game to start out the season. I wrote it in my notes. I was a big fan of Herbert last year. You come back for your Senior Season, blow me away against an SEC defense. Never came close to doing so. Check down machine, underneath throws, bubble screen cheese. I’m done with it.

I learned this a long time ago. Something I also wrote in my notes. When you scout quarterbacks, assume they all suck. Go in with the most negative mindset in the world. It’s impossible to watch Herbert this year and have him convince you he doesn’t suck. You cannot unsee the Arizona State game.

Look, maybe some of it is coaching. Mario Cristobal is an offensive line coach at heart. I get that to an extent. Still, time after time, he never let it rip. I’m not buying it’s all on coaching. What I am buying is that he has a hard time reading coverages and we know his accuracy is already spotting so he wants to dump it off short. I’ll stick with my comp as a worse version of Josh Allen.
