Mavericks acquire Caleb Martin from 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers are trading Caleb Martin to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for guard Quentin Grimes and a second-round pick, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Tuesday.

Martin, 29, signed a four-year, $32 million deal with the 76ers this offseason after haphazardly rejecting a sizable extension from the Miami Heat before declining his player option. Through 31 games, he’s averaging 9.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists on 43.5 percent shooting, including 37.9 percent from 3-point range (2.8 3PA) and 62.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Martin’s fit in Philadelphia wasn’t perfect, but one of the biggest why Nico Harrison traded away Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis over the weekend was leaning into more defense. At the very least, he can provide solid point-of-attack defense with the ability to defend 2-3 positions alongside Kyrie Irving.

This move does push the Dallas Mavericks over the luxury tax–and roughly $200K from the first apron–according to HoopsHype’s Yossi Gozlan, should Martin not waive his trade bonus. Now, Dallas is $4.4 million above the tax.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia saved nearly $4 million by swapping Martin for Grimes, who’s been traded three times over the last calendar year. Grimes, 24, is set to be a restricted free agent at the end of this season, currently owning a $4.3 million cap hit.

I am a big fan of Grimes’ skillset as a 3-and-D specialist, which could fit alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George. He’s averaging 10.2 points and 3.8 rebounds in 22.8 minutes per game, shooting 39.8 percent from beyond the arc while being a bulldog defensively.
