Courtney Lee Technical Leads to Knicks Loss (Justin Ford/USA TODAY Sports)

Memphis, TN. – When playing against a team that traded you away, you hope to be the reason your new team walks away with the Win. However, former Memphis Grizzly, Courtney Lee, did just the opposite Wednesday night in FedEx Forum. Lee’s technical foul in the final 20 seconds of regulation swung the momentum Memphis’ way and aided in the Knicks 25th loss of the season.

Memphis, who entered the 4th quarter up 13, saw their lead dwindle down to 3 with 48 seconds left to play. The comeback reached its peak with a Lee 3 pointer and it lost its steam with his subsequent technical all within 20 seconds of gameplay. The technical was called while the 2 teams lined up for a jump ball with 17 seconds left. This was due to a careless possession for Memphis on the play before that resulted in Tim Hardaway Jr. and Tyreke Evans jumping at midcourt.  While getting in position, Lee and Memphis rookie Dillon Brooks traded shoves with Lee making the final move of putting an elbow in Brooks’ midsection. Official Derrick Stafford issued a warning but Lee continued to make comments toward Brooks which lead to Stafford making the call for a technical.

Lee’s reaction in the moment and post-game mirrored as he spoke to the disbelief at the call in that moment.

Lee: “I’m lost for words…I wasn’t expecting to get a tech like that.”

Lee finished with 18 points to follow up his 24 point performance on December 6th against Memphis, in which the Knicks won by double digits.

Memphis left the court victorious but find themselves 7.5 games back of the 8th and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. This is an important few weeks for the Grizzlies as they approach the trade deadline in a much different position than in the recent past. This is the first season in the last 7 that Memphis will be looking to dump some of their talented vets for young prospects or draft picks instead of trading the latter for the former.
