An exciting slate of college football is ahead of us, as Championship week has arrived. Week 16 of the college football season will consist mainly of conference championship games. The battles in the ACC and BIG 10 will likely have College Football Playoff implications, while the SEC Championship should determine the Heisman winner.
This is the last week of the 2020 college football regular season. Following Championship week will be Bowl Games, which I will cover in some capacity. The games this weekend should be exciting and the spread always makes things more interesting. Without further ado, here are my picks against the spread for Championship week.
4 Ohio State (-21.0) vs. 14 Northwestern
Yes, Ohio State has played in just one game since November 21. And yes, Northwestern has played solid football all season. However, they are nowhere near as talented as the Buckeyes. Justin Fields and company have scored no less than 38 points in a game this season and show no signs of slowing down. Meanwhile, Northwestern’s offense is relatively inefficient and will certainly struggle against Ohio State’s stellar defense.
Cornerback Shaun Wade was recently named the BIG 10 Defensive Back of the Year, while the rest of the defense is dominant in their own right. While most will want a different result, I do not think this game will be all that close. Give me Ohio State up big at Lucas Oil Stadium.
UCLA (-7.0) vs. Stanford
Although this game is not a conference championship contest, I had to include it. I did not want to pick against UCLA last week, but it needed to be done and ultimately was a winner in my 3-1 week. In this game, however, I’m taking the Bruins. Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson looked good except for a few errant throws against USC and the defense was able to generate three takeaways. Additionally, running back Demetric Felton unsurprisingly had another impressive performance.
This week, the Bruins take on a decent Stanford team who relies heavily on the run. UCLA beat the Cardinal by 18 points last year, and I expect those winning ways to continue. Give me UCLA by a touchdown in Pasadena.
19 Louisiana Lafayette (+3.5) vs. 13 Coastal Carolina
I may be one of the few people with this opinion, but that’s alright with me; Louisiana Lafayette is better than Coastal Carolina. Sure, Coastal got the better of the Ragin’ Cajuns in their first matchup. However, Lafayette is incredibly talented and has gone overlooked all season. Their running back tandem of Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas has dominated the Sun Belt, and their defense has had some standout performances.
The Chanticleers have been impressive this year, but may be facing their toughest task yet in a Ragin’ Cajun team out for revenge. If Coastal can win at the trenches like they did against BYU, maybe they will finish the regular season undefeated. However, I’m going to go in the opposite direction and predict that Louisiana Lafayette wins the Sun Belt in 2020.
