Finding competent running backs should be easy. Teams seem to find late round gems at the running back position all the time. Some would argue, it’s the most replaceable position in all of football. Point being, it’s hard to screw this thing up. Unless you’re the Carolina Panthers. To the surprise of no one, Chuba Hubbard sucks. Wonder how that happened?
I’ll be honest; I just never saw the hype. Even when draft experts thought Hubbard was the hottest thing in college football, I laughed. I went on record numerous times stating the fact that I thought Hubbard was a full-blown bust. Maybe it’s hard to be a full-blown bust as a fourth round pick. It should also be made clear that Hubbard never had any ability, to begin with.
Hubbard has basically been the worst running back in the NFL. No, seriously… that’s a fact. Hubbard is averaging 3.5 yards per carry (which is hilariously the same number as Saquon Barkley who I also recently ripped). Hubbard currently sports the worst rushing yards over expected mark in the NFL at -.91. Hubbard is so bad that he’s basically losing an entire yard on every carry than he otherwise should. Can I go throw up now?
This should be Hubbard’s time to shine. The offense is desperate for anyone to step up and Christian McCaffrey has basically been hurt all year. It would have been so easy for Hubbard to, at minimum, carve out a serious role for himself in the future. That’s not going to be the case.
Hubbard is barely out-touching Ameer Abdullah and he’s only been on the roster for a couple of weeks. While on the surface it was safe to like the Panthers 2021 NFL Draft class, things have not gone that way. Jayce Horn looks like he can play but passing on Micah Parsons appears nothing short of idiotic. Terrace Marshall hasn’t done anything yet. The predictable things have also panned out. Tommy Tremble is a waste and Chuba Hubbard blows.
Jaret Patterson, Khalil Herbert, Jermar Jefferson, and Kenneth Gainwell have all quickly proved to be better players and were either not drafted or taken after Hubbard.
Carolina got off to such a hot start but this franchise has not been the same since Christian McCaffrey got hurt. CMC covers up for a lot of sins. Sins that Hubbard wouldn’t have a clue how to cover up because the guy can’t play. I’ve been a Matt Rhule supporter but there was no defending this one. It just happens to turn out that Hubbard not working is really low on the list of problems.
