Chris Godwin is out for the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL. The Buccaneers’ Pro Bowler got hurt in the second quarter of the defending champs’ 9-0 loss to the division rival New Orleans Saints. Godwin had an awkward collision with Saints defensive back PJ Williams. On a night where the offense was in question, this will only add more concerns. The Bucs were so heavily favored in their chances for a second straight Super Bowl in part because of their receiving core. Having the luxury of making Antonio Brown your 3rd best receiver behind Godwin and Mike Evans made this offense so tantalizing. Now, with Godwin out for the year, Tom Brady will have to do the best with he has.
It’s also worth mentioning that Brown is not active. He is still serving a suspension after the NFL found that he submitted a fake vaccine card. As a result, the likes of Scotty Miller and Breshad Perriman will have to fill in with the Pro Bowler Evans. It helps no one that the Buccaneers putting up a goose egg on Sunday Night Football. Keeping that and Godwin’s injury in mind could give their offensive struggles a chance to go from bad to worse.
There are many words in the English language one could use to describe the relationship between Tom Brady and Bruce Arians. The Tampa Quarterback and Coach have so far managed to work quite well. However, it hasn’t seemed close to the heights that Brady and former coach Bill Bellicheck reached within the past 2 decades. Arians and Brady have shared jabs with the media and also went through a rough start last season. Regardless, the pair could definitely be described as respectful towards one another. Which makes the next few weeks that much more interesting. Arians will be wanting more from the offense while Brady will have a glaring shortage at skill positions.
After bringing back all the starters from their Super Bowl win, many expected the Buccaneers to be more than able to do it again. However, the 2021 season has been far from a walk in the park in Tampa Bay. Drama, injuries, and mistakes have made it a rollercoaster of a season. This does not mean in any way that Brady and the champs have lost a step. However, there has been more than enough intrigue to date. Chris Godwin’s injury is a tough pill to swallow, but this ship will have to keep sailing.
