The Chicago Blackhawks are moving in a different direction

Chicago Blackhawks are moving in a different direction. Stan Bowman, the Blackhawks general manager, decided this is the most appropriate action. Last week he addressed the Chicago fans with this message.

Personally, I think this is him admitting that he screwed up. Furthermore, he is admitting to mistakes that he made. Mostly driven by the success of the three cups in this decade. I also believe that he is trying to save his job.

Last year

Last year the Blackhawks made the playoffs, which hasn’t happened since 2016, where the Blackhawks made the playoffs as a one seed, then proceeded to be swept by the eight seed Nashville Predators.

This year the Hawks didn’t belong in. But that’s a different story. Anyway, because of Covid-19, the Blackhawks were playoff bound.

As a 12 seed, the Blackhawks did upset the Edmonton Oilers. But once they started in the playoffs, they got beaten pretty quickly by the Vegas Golden Knights.

Instead, Bowman tried to tweak the roster, making lousy trade after lousy trade, getting rid of Artemi Panarin, Tyler Motte, and many others.

But this change needed to happen sooner than now. The Blackhawks have been in no position to compete for a while. And frustration from the core players has boiled over. Jonathan Toews expressed this frustration, and they talked it out.

Youth movement

The Blackhawks are one of the youngest teams in the league. So going with the young guns makes sense. But is it too late?

Stan Bowman cleared the way for the youth movement. Getting rid of Olli Maata helps pave the way for young defensemen Adam Boqvist and Ian Mitchell. These two make up the young defensive core.

The forward position is still kind of a log jam, even after the Brandon Saad trade. The Hawks have a log jam at the forward position.

As far as forwards go, the young guns are Kirby Dach. Who by all accounts had a fantastic first season with the Hawks.

Dominik Kubalik is another up-and-coming young star. Kubalik made an immediate impact in his first year in Chicago. He was even in the running for the Calder trophy for most of the year.

As you can see, the Blackhawks are transitioning to a rebuilding period. Stan Boman is trying to build around Johnathon Toews and Patrick Kane. Building a younger and faster team with those two all-stars will be a long road. But let’s see if he can build them back up to the top of the mountain.
