The Boston Celtics are adding another number to their collection. Nobody has more numbers retired than the Boston Celtics. It’s getting to the point where they should probably unretire some numbers. Anyway, number 5 is being retired in TD Garden. Kevin Garnett will have his number retired by the franchise he won a championship for in 2008. An incredible gesture by the Celtics.
Garnett will forever be remembered for wearing his heart on his sleeve each and every night. Nobody was a more feared competitor than KG. Paul Pierce already had his number retired so two thirds of the Big 3 from 2008 will go up in the rafters. It’s doubtful that Ray Allen is going up there. Although, Rajon Rondo may have an outside chance when he reties.
There’s no doubt that Kevin Garnett is one of the best players to ever play in the NBA. The Celtics picked a hell of a day to announce this with the Clippers in town. Doc Rivers, of course, being the coach for that 2008 title team. I’m maybe a little surprised the Celtics did this, but then again, Garnett brought a championship to Boston.
The Kevin Garnett trade will go down as one of the best ever in the resume of Danny Ainge. Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, cash considerations, Boston’s 2009 first-round draft pick (top 3 protected), and the 2009 first-round pick that Minnesota already traded to Boston previously. Talk about a heist!
Garnett is one of the first players that made me love the NBA. Let’s be honest, it’s hard to embrace sometimes with all the flopping. Garnett was one of the true old school OG’s that will fight you at any time.
