Do The Celtics Regret Letting Bol Bol Go?
They should. Bol Bol has been a revelation for the Orlando Magic. Yes, the Magic are bad but they have a dangerous young piece on their roster that they got for free. Someone who should have been considered a top-ten talent in the 2019 NBA Draft. I just want to know if the Celtics regret this decision because they should and I don’t think we should forget about it.
I’ve been told this Brad Stevens guy is so wonderful when the opposite is true. Stevens got a good hard look at Bol Bol. That guy was in the building and the Celtics determined that he wasn’t worth their time. I have a hard time with that. Especially when the Celtics already let Alperen Şengün go in the Al Horford trade. This was the Celtics’ chance to get their hands on a young front court demon that could be developed along with this young winning core. Once again Stevens got it wrong.
Yes, I understand that this move was part of getting under the tax. I firmly understand that. However, I’d argue Stevens picked the wrong guy to ship out of town. Did Malik Fitts need to be on the roster? What about Nik Stauskas or Juwan Morgan? I just want it on the record that I would have kept Bol Bol and if we had to absolutely get under the tax, someone else would have gotten moved. Was it necessary to bring back Daniel Theis?
Bol, 23, is averaging 12 points, 1.6 blocks, and 7.1 rebounds across a touch more than 26 minutes per game. He’s also under contract for another year making nothing ($2 million). He’s a 7-foot-2 demi-god that can shoot (38.8% from 3) and the Celtics let that man walk out the door. For what? Are you telling me this guy couldn’t help you right now or down the road? Was it cool that Danilo Gallanri and his zero minutes was Boston’s big offseason add instead?
Shame on Brad Stevens. If you’re going to trade away first round picks, then adding intriguing young talents like this is a good way to counteract that. Nobody is talking about it because the record masks all but this was a whiff and they should acknowledge it.
