Carmelo Anthony Retires from the NBA
Longtime veteran Carmelo Anthony is retiring from the NBA, Anthony announced the news on Twitter Monday.
Anthony, 38, played 19 seasons in the NBA. Throughout his career, he was one of the most prolific scores of his generation. In his prime, he was practically guaranteed to average 20 points per game. In the 2011-12 season, Anthony won the scoring title with 28.7 points per game on 44.9 percent shooting, including 37.9 from 3-point range.
Anthony did his best work with the Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks. In the 2003 NBA Draft, the Nuggets picked Anthony No. 3 overall. With Denver, he played seven full seasons before being traded to the Knicks in the midst of his eighth season.
Anthony became one of the biggest household names in the Association during his seven years with the Knicks. Anthony then closed out his historic career by jumping around the league as he made stops with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Lakers.
Anthony finished his career with 28,289 points, the ninth-most in history. Additionally, was a 10-time All-Star and six-time All-NBA selection.
The only flaw in Anthony’s sensational career was that he was unable to win an NBA Championship. In fairness, he never played on a superteam. In his best seasons in New York, he ran into sensational Celtics, Heat and Pacers teams that he was unable to dethrone. Anthony’s deepest playoff run came in 2009, when he made the Western Conference Finals with Denver. Unfortunately, that series went to the Lakers, who eventually won the NBA Finals over the Orlando Magic the following round.
Outside of the NBA, Anthony had a legendary Olympic and College career. At the Olympic level, Anthony won three gold medals with Team USA. In college, he famously led Syracuse to a national championship in 2003.
