Cam Newton Vows NOT To Change His Playing Style

Happy Birthday, Cam Newton. The Panthers quarterback turns the dreaded 30 today. Newton is coming off shoulder surgery this offseason and pundits have started to question if Newton should change his playing style as a dual threat quarterback. That doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.

Newton claims he is too old to change his playing style:

I’m too old to change,” Newton said Friday at his charity kickball tournament regarding his playing style, via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer.

“I’m not changing. But I can get better, that’s one thing that I can do,” he said Friday. “I like that word — better. At this particular point, the things that make me me are still cemented in. It’s just up to me to take my game to the next level and kind of branch off and get better.”

Newton has rushed for over 350 yards in every single season he’s been in the NFL. Newton is also averaging an efficient 5.2 yards per carry. The Panthers signal caller hasn’t been quite the same runner since his MVP season in 2015 when he rushed for 10 touchdowns that year. That’s the Cam Newton the Panthers need. 2015 Super Bowl Cam. I’m just afraid those days are over.

The good news Carolina fans can point to this year is that Cam was much more accurate in 2018. It was the first time that he completed over 60 percent of his throws since 2013. If we start seeing 70 percent Cam Newton with a little rushing attack, the Panthers can be really dangerous. Maybe drafting Will Grier in the 3rd round will light a fire under Newton to continue to improve in the latter stages of his career.
