Baltimore Ravens have released defensive lineman Calais Campbell

After a short time with the Ravens, Baltimore has decided to release veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell. Via Baltimore Ravens Twitter.

All NFL teams will have to be under the salary cap by Wednesday at 4pm, and with that rule, they have released Campbell. He will save the Ravens $7 million in cap space and bring them under the salary cap to avoid a penalty from the NFL.

Campbell has played three seasons in Baltimore where he has been a vital piece to their defensive line. The 36-year-old decided not to retire after this season, which ultimately lead to his releasing this morning.

In the 2022-23 season, Campbell came off an impressive season for a 36-year-old. He posted 36 tackles, 14 QB hits, and 5.5 sacks, which is in fact the most since joining the Ravens. In his time as a Raven, 113 tackles, 11 sacks, 36 QB hits, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

Baltimore Ravens general manager and vice president Eric DeCosta made comments on the releasing of the veteran defensive lineman. “Calais defines what it is to be a Raven,” DeCosta said about Campbell. “He personifies professionalism, and his contributions to our organization – both on and off the field – are immense. With his passion, leadership and toughness, Calais has undoubtedly produced a Hall of Fame-worthy career.” Via Baltimore Ravens Twitter.

“While this is the worst part of the business, we have not closed the door on the possibility of him returning to our team in the future.” Via Baltimore Ravens Twitter.

Campbell may be old, but he still has enough left in the tank for another season or two. He is still a great player and even better person. Look out for him to join another team during NFL free agency this offseason.
