The Broncos are in total rebuild mode. They’re paying Russell Wilson to not play for them. They’re totally starting over and one of their young building blocks is already down for the count before the 2024-25 NFL Season even begins. Drew Sanders tore his Achilles during the offseason and will likely miss the upcoming season.
Broncos insider Mike Klis of 9News was the first to report the news:
This is just a brutal loss for the Broncos. I had Sanders listed as my number one linebacker in the 2023 NFL Draft. As a rookie, Sanders saw action in all 17 games but played mostly special teams. He also switched from inside to outside linebacker later in the season. Probably because they realized how good he is at rushing the passer.
Denver was certainly counting on Sanders to be part of that outside linebacker mix in 2024. The good news is that Denver drafted Jonah Elliss (who I’m also high on) in the third round this year. Beyond that, the Broncos also have Jonathon Cooper, Baron Browning and Nik Bonitto. Browning is a good player but it’s not exactly a star cast outside of him.
For anyone who had Denver as a surprise team in 2023-24, this will certainly hurt their efforts in trying to get back in the mix for the AFC West. For that to happen, the Bo Nix pick is going to have to pan out in a big way until the rest of this roster gets back on track.
