Well, that was quick. Only two days after his impressive performance on Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) Bo Nickal has been given his first fight in the UFC as reported on Twitter by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.
The 26-year-old will face off with Jamie Pickett at UFC 282 on Dec. 10 in Las Vegas. This will be a quick turnaround for the former NCAA wrestling star following his impressive 52-second submission win over Donovan Beard on Tuesday.
There was a callout of Khamzat Chimaev, but this fight with Pickett makes much more sense for Nickal and the UFC, providing him a test against a fighter with significantly more MMA experience.
Now 3-0, Nickal will be taking a huge step up in opponents against a guy in Pickett who has over 20 professional fights. But Nickal is the guy that has no care for who he debuts against and will try finishing any opponent that stands across from him.
Pickett has lost his last two fights to Kyle Daukaus and Denis Tiuliulin by submission and TK, respectively. With the hype surrounding Nickal, Pickett, 34, will have to prove that he still has what it takes to fight in the UFC.
Boasting a record of 12-8, the majority of Pickett’s losses have come via submission, something that Nickal has a skill of doing.
This seems like a straightforward debut for Nickal that will likely see him as a heavy favorite, but that by no means implies that it will be. There is a lot of hope around the UFC world that Nickal will be a UFC champion one day and this fight with Pickett is his first step towards achieving that goal.
