Earlier in the week, Bill Belichick went on record saying that “Nobody works harder than Cam does.” Everyone reacted like “Oh shit, he’s out working Tom Brady.” Our very own Trey Daubert said:
It takes a lot to impress Bill Belichick but somehow Cam Newton has done just that in a short amount of time. Belichick has praised Cam Newton’s work ethic and couldn’t have spoken about him in a better light. Belichick loves his new quarterback.
But I’m here to say “Don’t eat the cheese.” This is FAR from the first time that Bill Belichick has said that exact same line and he’s said it about many players. According to Zach Cox of NESN, Bill Belichick has said “Nobody works harder than” about the following players:
- Tom Brady
- James Develin
- Brandin Cooks
- Deatrich Wise
- Derek Rivers
- Stephen Gostkowski
- Chris Hogan
- Matthew Slater
- Julian Edelman
- Danny Amendola
- Dion Lewis
- Wes Welker
- Jerod Mayo
- Tim Wright
All those names are also from “A quick twitter search.” No one can use this quote to actually buy into Cam Newton with the New England Patriots. Belichick saying “no one works harder than [insert name here]” is just like another coach saying “We like what we see.” It’s almost a throw away comment at this point. For everyone who took it as “Cam Newton is a harder worker than Brady” I’m here to tell you that you’re dead wrong. Belichick’s comments don’t mean crap.
This is what Bill Belichick loves to do. He loves to spin the narrative and use it for himself or to throw other coaches and organizations off. It makes people believe one thing, when it’s all about something else. It’s misdirection and it’s amazing that so many people are buying in. Belichick has to say that he likes what he’s seeing with Cam Newton, otherwise he’d look like an idiot for making the signing.
By saying that Cam Newton is working harder than everyone, that’s making the other 31 teams look like idiots. This is Belichick 101.
