Ben Roethlisberger on JuJu Smith-Schuster Injury: “I Miss That Guy”
It has been an up and down year for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021. After taking the first game of the season on the road against the Buffalo Bills, expectations quickly ramped up only to come crashing back down. During their week 5 win against the Denver Broncos, receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster suffered a season-ending shoulder injury which will require surgery. Schuster has been a key figure in the Steelers receiver corp since entering the league in 2017. He signed a one-year deal this off-season to return to Pittsburgh, and according to his Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, this one hurts.

“It’s awful,” Roethlisberger said, via Matt Freed of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “And I’ll speak selfishly, I’m hurt because I miss that guy. I mean, what he brings to this team — his energy, his excitement, the leadership. It sucks, it really does. And I’m not even the one hurt. I spoke to him on Sunday night, I felt his pain through the phone, speaking to his mom as well. It’s just sometimes things aren’t fair and we don’t know why they happen. And a guy that has given so much and a guy that means so much to this team and to me specifically, it’s not fair.”
When you take a look at some of the other weapons this Pittsburgh Steelers team has on their roster, it’s hard not to argue that they have the pieces to overcome a major injury like this. Guys like Chase Claypool, Diontae Johnson, and rookie RB Najee Harris are all supremely talented, but Ben Roethlisberger made it known that missing a guy like JuJu Smith-Schuster will have a lasting impact on this team for the remainder of their season.
