Albert Okwuegbunam: Reliable Fantasy Tight End With Russell Wilson?

Albert Okwuegbunam has a chance to become a reliable fantasy tight end now with Russell Wilson in Denver. Then again, maybe not? (Hyoung Chang | DP 2020 The Denver Post, MediaNews Group.)

Albert Okwuegbunam: Reliable Fantasy Tight End With Russell Wilson?

All of the Broncos’ pass catchers took a leap in terms of fantasy value this offseason after the acquisition of Russell Wilson. Sign me up for all of the Jerry Jeudy stock this year! The trickier one to project, of course, is the tight end position. Is this the year of Albert Okwuegbunam? It’s almost impossible to know either way.

I think there is a reason why Denver didn’t hesitate to add Noah Fant to the Wilson trade. I think they know the same thing I do. Okwuegbunam is probably better or has a higher ceiling than Fant. The former Iowa product doesn’t always have the most reliable hands and certainly hasn’t performed up to par as a first round pick. Okwuegbunam was always a great flier in the middle rounds and it feels like we could be on the verge of something special.

Then again, the selection of Greg Dulcich might suggest otherwise. If Denver really trusted Okwuegbunam, would they have really drafted the UCLA tight end in a draft where they were already limited on picks? Maybe they really like Dulcich and just thought he was the best guy on the board. Regardless, it obviously puts a hamper on Okwuegbunam’s potential value.

Additionally, Wilson has really never produced a reliable fantasy tight end. I mean EVER. Jimmy Graham was a lowkey disaster in Seattle. Other guys like Gerald Everett, Greg Olsen, Will Dissly, ect never yielded any fantasy worthy tight ends in season long formats.

Why should we expect this to be any different in Denver? Especially with more young and unproven options? Javonte Williams will be given more than his fair share of carries in the backfield. Jeudy, Tim Patrick, Courtland Sutton, and KJ Hamler are all vying for targets as well. Maybe there just aren’t enough balls to go around for a tight end when Wilson is the quarterback for whatever reason?

It’s unfortunate but after the Dulcich selection, I think it kinda whips out the Okwuegbunam fantasy experiment. I could easily be wrong. It just feels like other guys feel like better gambles. Which, again, is the keyword. GAMBLES. That’s what every tight end is after you get past the premier guys at the position. Good luck figuring this one out.
