AEW Fight For The Fallen Results & Review (7/27/22): New Championships Revealed

AEW Fight For The Fallen is an event created to raise money for different charities. This year’s event was helping Oceana, a non-profit ocean conservation organization focused on protecting the world’s oceans and its wildlife. Fight For The Fallen is a pay-per-view quality show that gets put out for free. This show was stacked with action and high-quality matches. In case you missed the show, this is everything that happened.

*AEW Interim World Championship Match*

Rush vs Jon Moxley (of Blackpool Combat Club)

Since becoming world champion once again, Moxley hasn’t been taking a break. This is his second title defense, the first coming against Brody King and he faced a tough opponent in Rush. Rush is coming off of a big win against his brother, Dragon Lee, at ROH Death Before Dishonor. Rush proved he can get physical and showed he won’t hold back, not even against his brother. He’s a two-time ROH World Champion in his own right and hasn’t been pinned in over a year. Rush served as a great test for Moxley, in what was a great match.

Review

It feels like Moxley never has a low-quality match. Every single fight is filled with heart, determination, and physicality. This one was no different as he faced off against another man who isn’t afraid to get physical. Rush showed everyone just the kind of wrestler he is. The match was about as hard-hitting and physical as they come. It didn’t take long for Moxley to get busted open, but that didn’t affect him. Regal was on commentary, and he was awesome as always. Although I don’t know why Rush got a shot at the title, he did serve as a nice challenger for Moxley. This was a pretty good match and served as a fun opener to the show.

Winner: Jon Moxley (c) (of Blackpool Combat Club)

New Championships Revealed

AEW announced and revealed the newest championship, a trios title. It has been rumored for a while that trios titles might get added and AEW finally pulled the trigger. There will be a tournament to crown the inaugural champions and the finals will be held at All Out. AEW has so many talented groups that will benefit from trios titles. I’ve been saying they need to do this, so I’m glad they did.

*FTW Championship Match*

Danhausen vs Ricky Starks (c) (of Team Taz)

Starks is the longest reigning FTW champion ever. The FTW Championship is a title Taz created back in ECW, and it is not recognized by AEW as a championship. Starks held an open challenge last week for the title and Cole Karter answered. After Starks picked up the victory, he claimed he had more left in the tank and issued another challenge. Out came Danhuasen, but Starks said he meant for next week and not that night. Starks handled Danhausen with ease and held another open challenge.

HOOK, Taz’s son and fellow member of Team Taz, came out. Starks trained HOOK and served as a mentor, so it was a shock he came out. HOOK got the best of Starks and won the FTW championship. After the match, Starks cut an emotional promo about how his time is now. Before he could finish, Powerhouse Hobbs, a member of Team Taz, turned on Starks and attacked him.

Review

This match was a rollercoaster of emotions. Personally, I love Team Taz and all of its members. I think Starks is one of the most underrated wrestlers on the planet. It was only a matter of time before HOOK won the FTW Championship. He is going to hold the title for a very long time. I enjoyed how Starks and HOOK showed respect after the match, even with HOOK beating him for the title. Although I’m sad that Hobbs and Starks broke up, I think they are going to have one hell of a feud. Both men deserve a big push in the company.

Winner: HOOK (c) (of Team Taz)

Dante Martin vs Sammy Guevara (of Jericho Appreciation Society)

This match didn’t have much build if any. It’s just two of the best, young high-flyers in AEW. This is the first time we’ve seen Guevara since he got thrown off the top of a steel cage at Blood & Guts. These are two young men in AEW who were looking to prove a point. Guevara is a former TNT Champion, so a win against him could have done a lot for Martin. Ultimately, Guevara proved he was always one step ahead of Martin and picked up the victory.

Review

On paper, this match is exciting. It features two of the youngest high-flyers on the roster who were looking to prove a point. I thought the match was a tad underwhelming, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t good. I still enjoyed the match and it had a lot of cool spots. Both men got to show their high-flying skills and put them to the test against one another. With Martin losing, it illustrates he still has some more to learn.

Winner: Sammy Guevara (of Jericho Appreciation Society)

We Hear from Jungle Boy

We heard from Junge Boy for the first time at AEW Fight For The Fallen since Christian Cage turned on him. Cage turned on Jungle Boy over a month ago and got Luchasaurus on his side. The two were a force to be reckoned with and had a lot of success. Cage cut a personal promo every week and Luchasaurus just destroyed his opponents in every match. Jungle Boy, however, cut an intense and personal promo on Cage.

He started the interview off by saying, “Christian Cage, you are the biggest p***y I’ve met in my entire life.” That set the tone for the entire interview. Jungle Boy went on to take some personal shots at Cage. He said the real reason Cage turned on him was that he was strapped for cash because his wife just divorced him. Cage interrupted his promo and said that he was going to prey on Jungle Boy’s weaknesses.

Review

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this side of Jungle Boy. It was nice to see him mad and take some personal shots at Cage. He always felt like a “happy to be here” guy, but he showed a different side of himself. He showed he can get personal and mean if you push him enough. They didn’t do a great job at explaining how Luchasaurus fit into it all, though. That’s the only thing I’m confused about with the promo. We will probably get this match at All Out in September. I won’t be surprised if Luchasaurus turns on Jungle Boy during his match with Cage. He was wearing his same all-black ring attire and was staring at Jungle Boy weirdly for the entire promo.

*Handicap Match*

Mark Sterling & Tony Nese vs Swerve Strickland (c)

Sterling and Nese started a petition earlier this month to get Strickland kicked off the AEW roster. They have been targeting him over the past couple of weeks. Last week, Strickland and Lee were celebrating winning the AEW tag team championships and Sterling and Nese interrupted their celebration and took verbal shots at Kevin Gates, a world-famous rapper, who was in attendance. Gates knocked out Nese and Strickland threw a cake in the face of Sterling. Sterling and Nese got their revenge by facing Strickland in a handicap match, with Lee banned from ringside. Nese was in the match for the most part but accidentally tagged in Sterling. Once Sterling was in the ring, Strickland wrecked him and picked up the win. After the match, Lee was shown knocked out backstage at the hands of Josh Woods.

Review

Overall, I think they did the match exactly how they should have. It was mostly Nese vs Strickland, but once Sterling got into the match, it was game over. I love Strickland, so it was nice to see him get to shine as a singles competitor once again. Josh Woods brings an interesting dynamic to things since he can be a formidable partner for Nese.

Winner: Swerve Strickland (c)

*AEW Women’s World Championship Match*

Miyu Yamashita vs Thunder Rosa (c)

Thunder Rose hasn’t had a challenger for her title since she defeated Toni Storm at Forbidden Door. She faced off against Miyu Yamashita at AEW Fight For The Fallen. Yamashita is a star in TJPW, a wrestling promotion in Japan. She’s a young prospect with a successful background and is a three-time Princess of Princess Champion in TJPW. She earned a shot at the title after she beat Thunder Rosa in a non-title match at TJPW Summer Sun Princess. Yamashita was looking to prove her win wasn’t a fluke and that she was the real deal. Thunder Rosa proved she learned from their last match by picking up the victory and retaining her title.

Review

I enjoyed this match a lot. It was nice to see Thunder Rosa get to compete against a highly skilled wrestler. Yamashita got a lot of exposure with this match, too. She got to show a large number of people, who might not know her, who she is. However, I do think this match should have been the main event. It seems like Britt Baker is next in line to get a shot at the title since she has been targeting Thunder Rosa after her return to television.

Winner: Thunder Rosa (c)

Daniel Garcia (of Jericho Appreciation Society) vs Bryan Danielson (of Blackpool Combat Club)

Garcia is coming off of a hard-fought loss to Wheeler Yuta at ROH Death Before Dishonor. It was a hard-hitting affair, but he needed to be ready for Danielson. Danielson made his much anticipated in-ring return AEW Fight For The Fallen, after suffering an injury. These are two men who have similar styles of wrestling. They’re in two factions that just don’t like each other. The Jericho Appreciation Society is everything the Blackpool Combat Club hates about professional wrestling. Both of these men know how to get physical and deliver stiff shots. The match went back and forth for the most part. Both men looked strong, but it was Garcia who came out on top, but now without some help. Towards the end of the match, someone who was under the ring, grabbed Danielson’s leg, ultimately distracting him and allowing Garcia to win.

Review

This was the best match of the night. It was exactly as hard-hitting and physical as I expected. These men have similar styles of wrestling, so they worked well together. I like having Garcia win since it feels like he hasn’t been victorious lately. Garcia is a very young talent, who has a very bright future. Giving him a win against Danielson is going to do wonders for him. It’s clear that the rivalry between Blackpool Combat Club and Jericho Appreciation Society is far from over, so I’m excited to see where it goes from here.

Winner: Daniel Garcia (of Jericho Appreciation Society)
