AEW Dynamite Preview (8/3/22): AEW Stars Make Their Return

AEW Dynamite is set to be an interesting one, with grudge matches, appearances from two top stars, and a first-ever match stipulation all bundled in. Dynamite is coming off of the Fight For The Fallen events last week. It’s packed full of action, so here’s what to expect heading into the show.

Powerhouse Hobbs in Action

Powerhouse Hobbs is going to be in action for the first time since he turned on Ricky Starks. Hobbs is a member of Team Taz along with former FTW Champion Ricky Starks and current FTW Champion HOOK. Starks beat Danhausen last week on AEW Dynamite for the FTW Championship and decided to hold an open challenge immediately following the match. HOOK answered the call and beat Starks to become the FTW Champion. After the match, Starks cut an emotional and passionate promo. Before he could finish the promo, Hobbs brutally attacked Starks. Usually when AEW advertises a wrestler as “in action” it is a squash match against a jobber. I fully expect to see that and I’m happy I’m not the one who is going to be standing across the ring from Hobbs. Also, I’m expecting to see Team Taz turn up during this.

Thunderstorm (Toni Storm & Thunder Rosa (c)) vs Britt Baker & Jamie Hayter

Toni Storm and AEW Women’s Champion, Thunder Rosa, are set to take on Britt Baker and Jamie Hayter. Ever since Baker returned to AEW television, she has been targeting Thunder Rosa. Thunder Rosa and Storm form an alliance after the former beat the latter to retain the AEW Women’s Championship. We have yet to get a new challenger for the women’s title, so I would expect something like that in this show. Baker and Hayter proved they can work together as a tag team after picking up a victory last week. They didn’t have the best record together as a team, despite being in the same group. Their win proved they could work together and pick up victories. These are some of the best wrestlers in the women’s division, so I expect this will be a solid match.

Matt Hardy vs Christian Cage

Christian Cage has been on a tear ever since he turned on Jurassic Express, taking personal shots at wrestlers for weeks. This is the first time we are seeing him in action since Jungle Boy returned and Luchasaurus showed he was on Jungle Boy’s side. Matt Hardy and Cage have a very rich history together dating back to over 20 years. Hardy was one of the victims of Cage’s personal attacks a couple of weeks ago. He gets his shot at revenge tonight on AEW Dynamite. I suspect either a promo from Cage after the match or Jurassic Express to come out.

*Dumpster Match*

The Acclaimed (Max Caster & Anthony Bowens) vs Gunn Club (Colton & Austin Gunn)

These two teams have had it out for each other ever since the Gunn Club turned on the Acclaimed. Austin Gunn and Max Caster faced off in a rap battle to determine the circumstances of the two teams’ match. Caster won the rap battle and revealed he will announce the match stipulation in the debut of his newest music video. In the music video, he announced that the match will be a dumpster match. This is the first time we have ever gotten a dumpster match. If I had to guess, I assume it will be similar to a casket match, but with a dumpster instead.

We Hear from Jon Moxley

We are set to hear from AEW Interim World Champion, Jon Moxley, but it’s unclear what this is going to be about. Moxley has been defending the AEW title frequently. Moxley is going to face either Chris Jericho or Wheeler Yuta at Quake by the Lake for the AEW title. I assume he is going to talk about the match at Quake by the Lake. Either way, it is going to be awesome.

Undisputed Elite Return

We are getting the much-anticipated return of the Undisputed Elite. Adam Cole hasn’t been seen since he got hurt, same with Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly. The Young Bucks will be there as well, so it will be interesting to see the dynamic of the group. I’m intrigued to hear what they have to say. I predict Hangman Page will come out and side with the Young Bucks and we will have two more trios to go after the newly announced AEW Trios Championships.

Orange Cassidy (of Best Friends) vs Jay Lethal

Orange Cassidy and Jay Lethal are part of two teams that don’t like each other. They have had their issues with each other for months and finally met last week in a match. Best Friends picked up the victory but did get attacked by Lethal, Singh, and Dutt. Cassidy and Lethal get to settle the score in a one-on-one match. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top and where both of these teams go from here.

Chris Jericho (of Jericho Appreciation Society) vs Wheeler Yuta (c) (of Blackpool Combat Club)

Chris Jericho and Wheeler Yuta are set to battle on AEW Dynamite. These men are part of two groups who have been feuding for the past couple of months. Chris Jericho is set to face Jon Moxley for the AEW title at Quake by the Lake next week. During AEW Dynamite last week, Wheeler Yuta called out Chris Jericho to a match. He suckered Jericho in and ultimately got what he wanted. He is facing Jericho and if he wins, he gets Jericho’s title shot next week.

These are two men who have different styles of wrestling, so it will be interesting to see how stack up against one another. Yuta is coming off of an extremely physical and hard-hitting match against another member of Jericho Appreciation Society, Daniel Garcia. Jericho is looking to prove he can still hang with the young wrestlers by winning and keeping his title shot.
