Adam Peters claims the Washington Commanders aren’t rebuilding: ‘We are trying to win right now’

Under Dan Snyder’s ownership, the Washington Commanders were not only a bottom-tier organization in the NFL, but in all of professional sports.

The longtime owner sold the team to a managing group led by Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris, which was unanimously approved last July. The arrow under Harris’ guidance pointed up, but the Commanders were still among the league’s worst in terms of the locker room, training facilities, team travel, treatment of families, etc., in 2023, according to the NFL Players Association.

The organization shifted in a new direction this spring, hiring general manager Adam Peters, who brought in former Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn to be the team’s new head man.

After finishing with the second-worst record in the NFC, Peters insisted this week that the Commanders aren’t in any sort of rebuild.

“Make no mistake about it,” Peters told 106.7 The Fan this week. “It’s not a rebuild, it’s a recalibration, and we are trying to win right now. We do have goals to be really good this season.”

This echoes what Quinn said upon him being hired by Washington.

“I know it’s a big topic and I would say this is a recalibrate,” Quinn said. “Finding our north again, and that starts with our identity of our club. So no, you will not hear me say the word rebuild at all. This is about assessing what we have. How do we add to that? And then how quickly we can accelerate this process together. There is no timeline on that, but we will push it hard to see how good we can get and how fast we can get.”

The Commanders have made the postseason just once since 2005, the last time they have won a playoff game. Over the last 18 seasons, they have finished with five or fewer wins seven times while only winning more than seven games just six times.

They drafted Jayden Daniels No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft over Drake Maye. They also brought in veterans Austin Ekeler, Bobby Wagner, Dante Fowler, Zach Ertz and Tyler Biadasz, among others.

More often than not, there’s a new team each season that leaps from the abyss into the postseason. Last year, it was the Houston Texans; In 2022, it was the New York Giants. In 2021, it was the Philadelphia Eagles. Could the Commanders be that team in 2023? Let us know in the comments!
