Vince Carter likely done at ESPN once contract expires

ESPN is cutting costs and Vince Carter appears to be one of the victims. While Carter will not be included in the company’s vast layoffs, it is unlikely the eight-time NBA All-Star will be re-signed when his contract expires in September, Front Office Sports was the first to report the news Friday.

The ESPN layoffs have been widespread today and the company has dropped the hammer on some massive names. The company’s NBA coverage has already taken a massive hit after Jeff Van Gundy, Jalen Rose and Max Kellerman have all been laid off today.

Outside of the NBA, LaPhonso Ellis, Keyshawn Johnson and Suzy Kolber have been fired.

Carter, 46, joined ESPN in 2020 and appeared on NBA Countdown, First Take, College Game Day, NBA Today, Get Up, and SportsCenter.

While Carter is a massive name, that likely comes with a massive salary. In that regard, it makes sense why Vinsanity was not kept for the long haul. It certainly did not help Carter that he was not an everyday member of a show.

The ESPN layoffs have shed light on the pecking order at ESPN. In the NBA department, it is clear that on-air talents like Kendrick Perkins, JJ Redick and Richard Jefferson were priorities.

The ESPN firings are far from over. The new fiscal year starts on July 1 which means ESPN has a ton of decisions to make today. At this point, nearly everyone at ESPN is at risk of being let go as Disney looks to cut billions in costs.

Carter should not have any issues finding another job in sports media. The 24-season NBA veteran is a fan favorite that is more than capable of bringing value to an on-air broadcast.
