2021 NBA Playoff Preview: #2 Brooklyn Nets vs #3 Milwaukee Bucks

So far, the 2021 NBA Playoffs have been nothing short of thrilling. As eyes begin to shift to the second round, we are on the cusp of having a great series on our hands, which could be the best we’ve seen since the classic battle between the Sixers and Raptors back in 2019. It is the NBA’s best offense in the 2021 regular season against the NBA’s most loaded offense since the days of Golden State’s “Big 4” from 2016-2019. This matchup screams fireworks, as it pits superstars against one another, as well as offensive masterminds versus defensive stalwarts. Considering that the Nets went into the 2021 NBA Playoffs as the title favorites, there will be plenty of eyes on this series. Let’s take a look at how things might unfold when the Brooklyn Nets take on the Milwaukee Bucks.

Why The Nets Will Win This Series

One word: Firepower. Brooklyn is already favored to win this series thanks in part to homecourt advantage but primarily due to their electric offensive capabilities. We have already seen the Nets’ Big 3 tie the postseason record for points scored in a game by a trio after torching the Celtics in Game 4 of their first-round series. Controversy aside, Durant, Harden, and Irving could not be stopped in Boston, as they put up 104 points by themselves in a 141-126 demolition job of the C’s. Even though Milwaukee plays much better defense with Giannis and Jrue Holiday leading the way, they will have their hands full, to say the least. James Harden put it best after Brooklyn’s Game 5 win over Boston, as he knows they have a special team if the Nets can put together 3 or 4 stops in a row. When Joe Harris, the league’s best 3 point shooter this season, is a team’s 4th option, then you know things are going well. Brooklyn has also shown an improved defensive effort this postseason, as they remain a top 3 team in blocks per game during the 2021 Playoffs. Things could get ugly in a hurry if the Nets are able to keep Milwaukee’s offense in check and get some heat checks of their own going. With a bench that has become deeper and deeper throughout the season and excellent coaching by Steve Nash, Brooklyn looks determined to climb the mountain in these playoffs and win their first NBA title.

Why The Bucks Will Win This Series

For starters, it looks like Milwaukee’s approach and mentality are completely different compared to the past couple of postseasons. While they did not dominate in the regular season like before, it looks like Giannis and company are here strictly for business. After dismantling and sweeping the Miami Heat out of the first round, this was evident as Giannis stated they did not want to “play with their food.” As well, the team defense on Milwaukee is excellent, led by two All-Defensive performers in Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday. While those two are the standouts, it will take a strong team effort in order to at least try and contain what Stephen A. Smith calls “Lethal Weapon 3.” Another advantage for Milwaukee is on the glass, where Giannis, Brook Lopez, and other big men will look to make the Nets pay in the rebounding department with their lack of size. They do have a chance in this series, but Mike Budenholzer and company will have to bring their best every night to make it happen. If the offense can perform as well as they did in the regular season, things could really change in their favor, but there are no promises in the postseason. Guys like Khris Middleton, Bobby Portis, and others will need to be shooting well in order to even think about beating Brooklyn. Another playoff failure this year could see big changes coming to Milwaukee, starting with the head coach.

Series Prediction: Nets in 7

Outside of the NBA Finals, this could be the most entertaining series of the 2021 NBA Playoffs. The 3 matchups in the regular season suggest this will be as close a series as they come, but the Brooklyn Nets and their stars simply have the edge. The Bucks could try their hardest, but it still would not be enough to stop this team. Especially considering Donte DiVincenzo will be out for the rest of the playoffs with an injury, Milwaukee is going to need to squeeze even more offense out of a shorter bench. In this day and age in the NBA, stars win championships, as they have always done, to be fair. However, no team has as many superstars as Brooklyn does, both past and present. From the roster to the coaching staff to the front office, the Nets have come remarkably far since being a bottom feeder only a couple of years ago. It is truly a rags to riches story when looking at the past half-decade for Brooklyn, and their quest for a title will more than likely continue into the Conference Finals and beyond.
