2015 NFL Scouting Combine: Quarterback Recap

The quarterback group finished up their workouts in Indy this week. The group as a whole is above average with some potential day one starters. As many as 5 quarterbacks could land in the top two rounds. Here are some of my thoughts on how the day went.

STOCK RISING:

1. Jameis Winston (Florida State)

Famous Jameis Winston has been my top rated quarterback since September. Winston may have had the most impressive week of any player showing off his confidence and intelligence. Jameis in my opinion has the chance to mold himself into a Cam Newton/Ben Roethlisberger type of guy. The most impressive part of Winston’s day was when NFL Network’s Steve Mariucci put the quarterback to the whiteboard. The former Florida State quarterback will likely remain in Florida when Tampa Bay makes him the number one pick.

2. Bryce Petty (Baylor)

Petty is a guy who I am not particularly high on but threw a good looking ball. Petty is a system quarterback who was groomed under Art Briles. Briles had a lot to do with RG3’s Heisman winning season which tells me nobody really knows what Petty is. The 23 year old impressed me by running faster than I orginally thought, while also throwing gems during the on field drills.

STOCK FALLING:

1. Blake Sims (Alabama)

The Alabama quarterback was down right horrific. Sims flat out could not hit the broad side of the barn and now projects as a runningback prospect. If anything Sims’ combine performance proves how good Amari Cooper was this season. If Blake does remain a quarterback by draft day he likely becomes undrafted.

2. Garrett Grayson (Colorado State)

To no fault of his own Grayson was unable to workout at Lucas Oil. Grayson injured his hamstring and likely lowered his draft stock in the process. The competition for mid round quarterbacks has been intense when including Bryce Petty, Brett Hundley, and Shane Carden. Garrett will need a strong pro day to combat his combine no show.

Player I need to do more homework on

  • Nick Marshall (Auburn)

Marshall worked out at corner and quarterback. Starting his career at Georgia, Marshall was a talented corner before being dismissed from the team. After transferring to Auburn coach Gus Malzahn converted him to quarterback in a run heavy offense. I like Marshall’s potential as a corner but I need to watch more of his Georgia games.

Vendetta’s Quarterback rankings

  1. Jameis Winston (Florida State)
  2. Shane Carden (East Carolina)
  3. Marcus Mariota (Oregon)
  4. Brett Hundley (UCLA)
  5. Garrett Grayson (Colorado State)
