2 Nintendo consoles that deserve a classic mini release (and 2 that do not)

Nintendo

Nintendo are perennial trendsetters in the gaming market. The innovators behind Super Mario and Pokémon have made waves with their Switch, Wii and DS consoles in the past.

But perhaps the most exciting, short-lived gaming trend Nintendo embraced and perpetuated in recent times is their classic mini consoles.

They released the NES and SNES consoles once more in their shrunken, emulated glory, and they were gobbled up by customers. But it has always begged the question as to what could be next.

Nintendo have refused to rule them out in the past. So with that in mind let’s take a look at two that deserve the mini treatment, and two that should never see the light of day.

They should release the Nintendo Gamecube again

The Gamecube was such a beautiful device in so many ways. But in any case, it’s the games that make the console what it is.

The Gamecube has plenty of Generation defining releases, whether it be Resident Evil’s 2002 remake, Super Mario Sunshine, Pokémon Colisseum, or the Legend of Zelda: Windwaker.

So why not bring it back? All of the above mentioned classics and more in one centralized hub would only serve to remind fans of the charming oddball console. Not to mention the cube aesthetic suits the miniature vibe of the classic consoles.

They should leave the DS alone

Although it would be cool to see some classics revived via a miniature release of their handheld system, this is something no one will ask for.

The DS was a handheld heavyweight at it’s peak, but a lot of it’s expensive collection of titles carry the burden of the hardware they were designed for.

Should fans really want a DS experience in 2022, maybe it would work better to do so via the Nintendo eShop.

The sequel to the Wii doesn’t need a mini console. It would be a complete waste of time at this point.

Majority of the stand-out titles through this generation have found their way onto Switch consoles.

It would be better served re-releasing the individual gems on Nintendo’s primary console, and leaving the Wii U in the past.

The Nintendo 64 has to make a comeback

When it comes to genre-defining titles, the N64 delivers in spades. Legend of Zelda, Pokémon and Mario all enjoyed fantastic outings throughout this generation among third-party classics such as Goldeneye and Conker’s Bad Fur Day.

Should Nintendo opt to revive any classic console in miniature form, it truly has to be the N64.
