Trey Lance To Miss 2022 NFL Season With Ankle Injury

According to Adam Schefter, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance will miss the remainder of the 2022 NFL season after sustaining an ankle injury against the Seattle Seahawks in week two. 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Lance broke his ankle and will undergo season-ending surgery on Monday.

Lance suffered the injury late in the first quarter on a designed quarterback run. He was charted off the field with his foot in an air cast.

Lance was two for three with 30 passing yards with three rushes for 13 yards prior to the injury.

The 2022 season was supposed to be Lance’s first opportunity as a starting quarterback in NFL after he was drafted with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Now, he will have to wait until 2023 for that opportunity.

After Lance’s injury, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was thrust back into the starting quarterback role. After taking over for Lance, Garoppolo led the 49ers to a 27-7 victory over the Seahawks. He finished the day with 13 completions on 21 attempts for 154 yards and a touchdown.

The starting quarterback role in San Francisco is nothing new for Garoppolo as he was the starter in 2021. In 2021, Garoppolo led the 49ers to a 10-7 record and NFC championship appearance.

Garoppolo’s role in San Francisco was in question all offseason. There was serious doubt as to whether Garoppolo would even be on the roster. But thankfully for the 49ers, they were able to restructure Garoppolo’s contract before the season began and Garoppolo agreed to return as the team’s backup. That move has paid off as he will now lead the 49ers for the remainder of the 2022 season.

Garoppolo’s transition to the starting role will also remove his name from the trade block. At one point, his name was in trade talks with the Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys. Now, his name will likely be off the table for those teams.
