The Celtics Need To Trade Terry Rozier

Remember when people thought Isaiah Thomas was good? I did nothing but laugh at those people because I knew the truth. He was a product of Brad Stevens’ system. A couple of years later we have another point guard who has taken the league by storm but really isn’t playing at a sustainable level. That guy is Terry Rozier who frankly isn’t good but for some reason, people have decided to believe that he is good. Now that Kyrie Irving has committed to re-signing with the Celtics past this season, it’s time to move on from Terry Rozier.

You can’t pay everyone

I know the common fan has no semblance of an idea of how the cap works so let me explain. There’s this thing called the salary cap. Then there’s another thing called the luxury tax. This season teams have $101.8 million to spend at the cap level with the luxury number set at $123.7 million. Boston will already be a luxury tax team with their payroll close to $130 million to start this upcoming season. Now the cap will go up slightly a year from now but it doesn’t change the fact that Boston will have a challenge on their hands trying to pay all of these guys.

Now next year you turn Kyrie’s cap figure from $20 to $37. That will add another $17 million to the Celtics cap. That luxury tax number starts to become scary already. Next year, Boston will have Daniel Theis, Marcus Morris, and Terry Rozier due for free agency as well. Paying Rozier an extension in the range of $12-15 million isn’t possible or realistic.

I would love the Celtics to retain Marcus Morris but I’m not sure that’s even possible. He can play multiple positions and play real defense. If they can keep him in the $7-8 million range I think that’s possible. Any more and he’s probably a goner. Add in the fact that Boston has FOUR 1st round picks next year. Let me repeat that. Boston has FOUR 1st round picks next year including Sacramento’s first-round pick. Those are the type of cheap contracts that the Celtics need to pad their books to keep the numbers down. One of those players could be a top 5 pick considering how bad Sacramento is.

What’s really important in the future is getting Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum locked up. Those two guys are future All-Stars for the next decade that puts the Celtics over the top. Boston realistically has five max players so long as Brown and Tatum continue to develop. Marcus Smart was just given a $52 million extension. Keeping Rozier isn’t realistic.

The Boston Celtics Are Winning The 2019 NBA Championship

What could a trade look like?

The Celtics almost have too much depth. No other team has this problem in the league. It’s not a bad problem to have but no other team in the league could just let Rozier walk and have their bench be totally fine. Dealing Rozier for a first round pick almost feels wrong given the fact that Boston already has FOUR 1st round picks next year. Maybe you just hang on to Rozier and a tasty deal pops up at the deadline. As of right now, nothing appears to make sense. Here’s my sleeper and this one probably isn’t going to happen. Why not deal Rozier as part of a package to rent Kemba Walker? Imagine having Kemba as the 6th man in an NBA Finals series against the Warriors? Now that’s the dagger. Regardless what the Celtics do with Terry Rozier, Banner 18 is coming.
