The hardest position for me to judge in the 2020 NFL Draft is the tight end class. It’s a really bad class but there are a lot of dart throws that could turn into something special. Thaddeus Moss is the epitome of what the Tight end class looks like this year. THIS IS RANDY MOSS’ SON WE’RE TALKING ABOUT! Then again, there’s nothing that Thad Moss has done to prove he is 100 percent a lock to become a quality starter. The potential is there but the rock solid on field is production is not. Is Thaddeus Moss more than just Randy Moss’ son?
Make the best dart throws you can in this tight end class. Thad Moss is a good place to start. 6-foot-2 isn’t tall for the position but 250 is a good size for it. You have to start with the blocking. Is the LSU tight end a great blocker? No, but does he try and get in the way? You bet. I saw Moss plenty of times get out to the 2nd level and try to lay a block in the run game. He tries and effort is half the battle here.
Moss only has one year of real production. 2016 was a 6 reception season at NC State. 2017 and 2018 included zero real playing time. 2019 LSU is the only film we have to go on. There’s plenty of room to grow but it’s not ideal in terms of projecting whether this is just a one year wonder.
You can see some of Randy in Thad. He’s not the pure blazing runner but the spectacular catches are there. 2019 included 47 receptions for 570 yards and 4 touchdowns. The good news is Moss got better as the year went on. 3 of his 4 touchdowns came in the two National Championship games. Moss also balled out against Alabama late in the year. It was a steady growth.
The Alabama game put him on the map. It can be summed up with one catch. That’s Randy Moss right there. That’s Trevon Diggs covering Moss too who is a highly respected cornerback prospect.
Thaddeus Moss made a huge impact in the games against Oklahoma and Clemson. Oklahoma didn’t have a linebacker that could keep up with him on seam routes like this one. Moss broke through. He didn’t run the 40 because of a foot injury but I imagine he would have run well for the position.
So what are we getting here? This isn’t the athlete Randy Moss was. He might be good enough of an athlete to thrive at the NFL level. Moss to me is a huge lump of clay. With only one year of playing time, there’s still a lot we don’t know. I’m not even sure if he’s better off at tight end or H-Back? The good news is that this is a bad tight end draft. Taking Randy Moss’ son feels like a smart gamble.
