The Dallas Mavericks have an exciting young core. Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis could turn into one of the most exciting young duos in the league. The problem in Dallas has been their inability to land premier free agents. I really don’t have an answer to why but it has been the reality. Dallas will look to change that narrative and have their eyes set on one player in particular.

Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer reported the following:

“Two sources with knowledge of the Mavericks’ thinking expect Walker, the Hornets’ three-time All-Star point guard, to be that team’s top target when NBA free-agency begins July 1.”

In order to pull this off, the Mavericks will have to maneuver a bit. They fall about $3 million short of max cap space this summer. That will mean they will probably have to trade someone like Dwight Powell or Courtney Lee to get it done. Walker, 29, has never played with an All-Star teammate during his entire career with the Hornets. He would have a hell of a chance to do that as long as Doncic and Porzingis continue to progress.

Walker, 28, would be a great fit in Dallas. It would give them another ball handler who can shoot. The floor spacing on this team would be unreal. Walker, Hardaway, Doncic, and Porzingis? Maybe add another guy with Jalen Brunson off the bench… Who doesn’t like that team?

The former UConn hoops star is having a breakout season at just the right time. Walker is averaging over 25 points a game for Charlotte this year which is by far his career high. He’s also averaging his highest assist totals since 2012. The Hornets are currently 30-37 and in 10th place in the East. If the Hornets, can’t even make the playoffs, maybe Walker will leave?
