Pat Freiermuth Will Breakout for Fantasy Football Owners in 2022

Remember earlier this week when I mentioned that none of the Steelers receivers should be made a priority to draft in fantasy football this year? Well, I am glad I made the distinction because if there is one player, outside of Najee Harris, you want on your fantasy team this year, it is Pat Freiermuth. Going into his second year in the league, Freiermuth is a breakout candidate this year, and if he progresses after the year he had last year, he could really etch out a place in the upper tier of TEs in the league.

“MMMUUUTTTTHHHHH” as Steelers fans would refer to him, was a second-round draft pick in 2021. That was the earliest the Steelers drafted a tight end since “HHHEEEAAATTTHH” Heath Miller in the first round back in 2005. Some questioned the selection of Freiermuth, as the Steelers had Eric Ebron on the roster, and assumed he was an intermediate answer at the position. But boy, did the 23-year-old ever make a name for himself last year. The season he put on made it clear the position is his for a long time, and that the Steelers absolutely nailed that pick.

In the 2021 season, Pat Freiermuth finished 12th in the NFL in fantasy points scored. After taking over the job in Week 6 after an injury to Ebron, he never looked back. Since Week 7 of last season, Freiermuth was TE7, averaging just over 11 points per game. Quarterbacks, especially young QBs or new to a system, will always lean heavily on their tight ends. They are their safety blanket. Well, the Steelers will be rolling out either a rookie QB in Kenny Pickett or a new QB to the system in Mitch Trubisky. I think it is fair to say that the targets are bound to go up for Freiermuth in 2022.

Currently, The ADP for Pat Freiermuth is TE13 and #115 overall. This might be a bit of a hot take, but I can almost guarantee that Freiermuth will finish in the top 10 for fantasy TEs this year and will be flirting with the top five. The writing is on the wall. Freiermuth is a special talent. If you don’t draft Pat Freiermuth in fantasy in 2022 and you decide on someone else, you will be regretting it later.
