Jared Goff is Terrible, Sean McVay is a Genius

Jared Goff is Terrible, Sean McVay is a Genius (Kelvin Kuo/USA TODAY Sports)

Jared Goff might be the luckiest player I’ve ever seen, along with Tom Brady, but that is a story for another time. Jared Goff has been the Los Angeles Rams QB for 3 seasons now, and the general consensus from fans is that he is an average QB. To which, I say, BULLSHIT. If it wasn’t for Sean McVay, Head Coach of the Los Angeles Rams, Jared Goff would be out of a job in the NFL. Jared Goff has had 2 seasons in the NFL with Sean McVay as his coach, where in those 2 years his numbers were decent. However, the one season without McVay, his rookie season, he was already being talked about being a borderline bust. Before you tell me, “But it was his rookie season, sometimes rookies don’t do well.” Blah blah blah, no one can turn it around that quickly either, unless you know, they have a head coaching genius like McVay.

Jared Goff 2016 Stats

But let’s go into the stats of Jared Goff, there we can make our evidence. In his rookie season, he posted a less than stellar 1,089 yards, 5 TDs, 7 INT, and his QB rating was at 63.6. This puts his averages per game at 155.57 yards, .71 TDs, and at a clear 1 INT per game. In those 7 games, he went 0-7, borderline bust material. I will give Goff some credit where his supporting cast wasn’t the greatest I’ve seen with Todd Gurley and Tavon Austin being his best options. But at this point in time, other than Calvin Johnson, that’s more help than what Matthew Stafford has gotten and I think he’s way better than Goff.

Jared Goff 2017 Stats

However, his next season everything MIRACULOUSLY turned around for Jared Goff, and well the Los Angeles Rams in general. Jared Goff put up 3,804 yards, 28 TDs, 7 INT, and a QB rating of 100.5 over 15 games. That makes his average per game at 253.6 yards, 1.86 TD, .46 INT. If you haven’t noticed, how does a QB go from throwing 7 INT in 7 games, to only throwing 7 in 15 games? Sean McVay. The supporting cast was better this year as well, as they added on to the offensive talent (not to mention defense but obviously the key today is offense.) With Todd Gurley and Tavon Austin still on the team, they added Robert Woods, Sammy Watkins, and before he started making noise, Cooper Kupp. This Rams team went 11-5 for the year and made the playoffs.

Jared Goff 2018 Stats

This last season, Jared Goff had top 10 caliber stats. He threw for 4688 yards, 32 TDs, and 12 INT. This put his game average at 293 yards, 2 TDs, and .75 INT. They added some more talent for helpless Goff at WR with the addition of Brandin Cooks. Sean McVay continues to live up to his destiny to be a coaching prodigy, the supporting cast got even better, and the Rams posted a 13-3 season. Obviously, this season was better for the Rams as they went to the Super Bowl and lost. The most damning piece of evidence I have for Goff being booty cheeks.

Most Damning Evidence

14 points. 14! This is all the points total that Jared Goff and the Rams had to put up to beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. They scored 3. As defensive as this game was, it shouldn’t have been for the Patriots. The Patriots had an average defense, but as always, they had coaching genius in Bill Belichick. Holding the electrifying offense of the LA Rams to 3 points is amazing….and mind-boggling. Now, you’ve heard me praise Sean McVay this entire time, yet only 3 points? Sean Mcvay took the blame for the Super Bowl loss, as any coach should most of the time, saying that he was out-coached by Belichick. But, I don’t know, as any other competent QB, IN THE SUPER BOWL, there are adjustments that need to be made, reads that you need to make, and most importantly win the game?! The Rams defense did their part to try to hold the Patriots to a low score for an opportunity to win. But with McVay being out-coached, Goff was helpless, reminiscing his rookie year by not knowing how to be a good QB. As I said, Goff is and may go down as the luckiest player in all of football, by not being good at all but being blessed with a genius of a coach and a superb supporting cast. However, don’t try to convince me that Jared Goff is a great or even average QB. I’ll scoff and -wait, Jared Scoff, HA, I like that. Oh right, I’ll scoff and shake my head knowing that you’ve been fooled by the immense help that he’s gotten.
