Erling Haaland is the Perfect Fit for Manchester City
Erling Haaland looks like he will be suiting up for Manchester City next season following in his father Alfie Haaland’s footsteps and he may just be the perfect fit for City.
Manchester City has not had a true striker since Sergio Agüero left for Barcelona. Gabriel Jesus has been playing as a false-9 sitting closer to the midfield than the attack. Otherwise, it has been Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden leading the attack, but both are playing out of their natural position. Sterling thrives on the wing with his pace and Foden is one of the brightest young midfielders in the world.
Haaland though is a true striker. For Borussia Dortmund in the 2021-22 season, he has been a scoring machine netting 25 goals in 26 matches across all competitions. He would likely have more if it was not for missing more than a dozen matches this season due to injuries. In the Bundesliga, only two players have more goals than the 18 scored by the 21-year-old Norwegian, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski leads the way with a remarkable 32 and Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick has 20 goals to his name.
The only player with over 20 goals for Manchester City this season is Riyad Mahrez with 23, but he has also played in over 40 matches in all competitions. Bringing in Haaland would allow for many of the other players to get back into their normal position and pose a different type of threat.
Manchester City has an incredible midfield with Foden, Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, and a few others that have displayed their great play-making abilities. With Haaland up top, it gives these players a central target that finds the back of the net with ease.
There are also not many players in the world that have the speed and strength that Haaland possesses and that will make him fit in perfectly in the Premier League. The Premier League has some of the biggest and best defenders in Europe in Virgil Van Dijk for Liverpool, Antonio Rüdiger for Chelsea, and Raphael Varane for Manchester United. All three are big guys standing 6’3” or taller while weighing more than 170 lbs. Compared to the defenders most strikers are of the smaller size, but Haaland has the size and strength to compete against any defender as he is the same height as Van Dijk at 6’4”.
With all the size and skill Haaland might be the player that Manchester City needs to achieve the double of winning the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. Manchester City has never won the Champions League, but they reached the final last season before losing to Chelsea and are in the semifinals of this season’s competition.
Manchester City is once again top of the Premier League with a one point advantage ahead of Liverpool but has been knocked out of both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. The biggest catch is that Manchester City will have to trigger Haaland’s €75 million ($81m) release clause.
