Bill O’Brien Deserved To Be Fired
Houston Texans CEO Cal McNair fired head coach and gm Bill O’Brien after an 0-4 start.
The fact of the matter is, O’Brien, dug his own grave. I’m not sure there’s been a head coach unintentionally tank his roster worse than O’Brien. Houston finally had enough and took the keys away from the drunk driver.
Do you have a pulse? Are you old enough to operate a vehicle? In that case, you’re smarter than Bill O’Brien. Check out O’Brien’s trade history as GM of the Texans. I’m not sure you could have convinced a 5-year-old to take the package on the right.
The Texans are 0-4 and have given away their first and second-round picks to the Dolphins for Laremy Tunsil. NOT IDEAL! The terrible trades listed above don’t even do O’Brien’s failures justice.
The Texans have the highest payroll in the sport ($248 million). O’Brien has handed out ridiculous contracts on his way out the door. A prime example is giving $27 million to Randall Cobb and essentially swapping DeAndre Hopkins for Brandin Cooks.
There’s no other way to say it. O’Brien tanked this roster unintentionally. The sad part is, you couldn’t get a toddler who plays Madden to agree to the trades O’Brien happily accepted.
This is not going to be an overnight fix. Sure, having Deshaun Watson helps, but this roster stinks. Houston has no young talent, no future draft picks, and no cap space. It’s going to be a serious challenge to turn this ship around. O’Brien deserved to be fired. Thank the heavens; the Texans finally cut the cord for Watson’s sake.
